Title: need some advice for DEPTH OF FIELD effect in 2.5
Post by: Zdenek Fajfrlik on June 02, 2013, 08:05:37 pm
hello everybody,
i need some help in 2.5:

while trying to animate the depth of field effect (focus near to focus far), i simply don't get the results.
- f stop parameter simply jumps from one value to another, no ramp ( means no continuous change from value 1 to value 2)
- the 'unsharp' area is a sort of blurry and un-nice, no comparison with a foto camera or video camera

but i already saw this effect animation in some videos , so the mistake must be on my side.

i suppose, that the effect only works with zoomed objective (like in foto-cameras)

is focal-length here also of any influence?

thanx for helping.

regards stan

Hmmm, don't get that in my v2.5.  How large is your scene, verts count?
Are you also using the Shift key for fine increments in value changes for the sliders?

No it works with default Focal Length or any zoomed length, but the expansion and other settings then may need adjusting to compensate for closeness to object.
What sort of distances are you working with, from camera to how far away?
Are you after distance blur or local blur?

---
What values are you using?  Focus distance and F Stop?  Expansion should be set as low as possible for normal DOF.

Perhaps try using the Alpine Template say clip 3, remove some of the other effects and then test with DOF.

hi peterm, thank you for the tips. i did some more experiments to learn and found out, that i must adjust the focus right after the focused object and not a step further away. i think, the jump-effect was based on the big distance between very near and (not necessary) far away within a short time.
at the moment i manage it to see the depth-movement (focusing about 50 meters in 50 frames.
i have to learn more about the interaction between f-stop and focus, anyway.
what i don't like is the way, the picture gets 'unsharo', is blurry the right word?
so it's about testing .
thanx stan

I really really love the Depth of Field.  You have to play around with it a bit - but once you get it figured out - IT IS SUPER POWERFUL!

As Peter said, the trick is to use the Shift key while adjusting the Focus distance and F Stop sliders. For more control, I would recommend that you use multiple keyframes, especially when you're working on shots with a very narrow focal range - otherwise, it will go from very blurry to 100% sharp over the duration of just a few frames...

hi guys, thanx to all of you, yes, its all about very precise adjustment, still learning, but getting better!
