Title: rotate selection around center of group
Post by: grearch on March 15, 2013, 12:19:56 pm
Hello,

is it possible to rotate the whole selection around ONE pivot, instead of the local pivot of each object?
i have created a group of object, e.g. garden table and chairs and want to rotate the whole group. i have to rotate each object. imagine you have 35 objects (e.g. hedges)!

thanks,

AL

don't think so, i think they'll all rotate around thier own center...

Indeed, what you're referring to would require that a selection of objects were treated like a single group, and this sort of functionality is currently not available in Lumion.

Would love to have this option. I am working on a city based animation Architectural project for my thesis, and it becomes very difficult when one is adding cars, trees and other blocks. What i would like to do is to create one group in detail, say for cars and then just copy them to a different street and rotate the whole set around on pivot rather than their own. In this way, it could easy save me hours, even days of work.

hi,
there is a little trick:

if you have a row of many cars (where moving each car would take too much time):

- move one to new startposition
- move next one to the end position

- move the rest somewhere between the two

- select all

- align space

- select all

- rotate all

- then move some of them a bit (or groups)

- align only a selection again (space)

- copy the whole thing

- move to other direction

- turn all / and move some of them as you like

this is the quickest way i found...and it looks again randomised

regards stan :-)

Thanks for the trick Stan (probably not so 'little'   :o ) but certainly making use of the Align (Context Tool) is useful in some cases.

I just wonder sometimes, especially for visualisation, if it's not just as quick or 'better' to place objects, then rotate all to required direction.  What block/group copying does is replicate, and so it looses that 'randomness' found in the real world  :-D.

hi peter,
absolutely, the randomness is important, and i normaly change the position of some elements within the after copying a row, so noone ever can realize the row as a copy, especially in distant overviews of sity plans.
but you are right, for smaller groups placing new elements is in deed quicklier, sometimes it's unbelievable, how quickly this works.

i use my 'copy' concept for placing long rows of cars (maybe 50 per row) in more streets for advanced movement. then things are absolutely random in every scene.

and it works perfectly for trees ! along streets. the space align is very helpful here. i wished, we had a align space to calculated curve with radius (start tree, end tree, middle tree).  -:)

Hi Stan

Thanks for further feedback.

re space align to curve:   :)  as always, your welcome to add that idea to a Wishlist topic.
