Sorry for the confusion. The release is in November. The current prices are early bird discount prices. Essentially it is a preorder for reduced price. It does however mean you will get an email the second it becomes available so you will probably be one of the first to download the new version. You can also see this information on this page: http://lumion3d.com/upgrade (http://lumion3d.com/upgrade)

I moved a large section of this thread to general discussion because it was largely turning into a discussion about desired features.
http://lumion3d.com/forum/general-discussion/wishes-for-future-lumion-versions/ (http://lumion3d.com/forum/general-discussion/wishes-for-future-lumion-versions/)

Note: If you are a licensed user you can add suggestions to the wish list topic. We keep track of all the things people want so this is one of the best places to place suggestions. http://lumion3d.com/forum/new-features-wish-list/ (http://lumion3d.com/forum/new-features-wish-list/)

Lumion 3.0 functionality is pretty much fixed now so the discussion is not really relevant for this thread. If you have any questions about the new functions or Lumion 3.0 in general feel free to ask :D

Let's keep this topic about this page from now on:
http://lumion3d.com/lumion-3.0-preview (http://lumion3d.com/lumion-3.0-preview)

The latest addition was a post about the new global illumination in Lumion 3.0.

In the real world light bounces of surfaces which allows you to light scenes with indirect lighting. In Lumion 3.0 we have a simple approximation of this which quickly allows you to improve lighting of your scenes.

The new Global illumination works for lighting from the sun and lighting from spot lights. It's a fast function so it won't add too much to your render times. We hear from our customers that the rendering speed is one of the things they like best about Lumion so we wanted something fast. You won't be able to get the same lighting quality as programs like Vray but then again the reward is the high rendering speed. Later I will post some more movies and screenshots about GI on the blog so you can see it in more detail.

Hi Remko
I'm very excited to see the new GI feature! Can't wait!!
One question though, will there be any need for me to upgrade my video card because of this new feature? I'm currently running a GEFORCE GTX 560M with 3gb. Thank you.

Hi 3D_Bard, it should not be necessary to upgrade your 560M card.

Realtime GI is good news indeed :)

Remko, I agree that the speed is a priority, at least for me it is, but that doesn't mean visuals must be compromised. Even a rough GI sampling will give much quality to the images, I don't think it is so much a bout every pixel getting the correct ray as to have the overall big chunks of light correctly computed.

One analogy would be an impressionistic rough painting style of a fine artist, no pixel accuracy, but the overall impression of the painting, the big brush strokes.

Geomerics Enlighten is used in FrostBite, and it looks great, and it is a very rough sampling. Cryengine also use a very rough approximation, but it is enough, because the speed gives the artist a better framework into making the image great, instead of waiting for the machine.

Looking forward to see more of the GI.

Regards
joqqy

You can imagine how hectic things are with everyone working super hard to get stuff done for 3.0 - we have very little time left and it's pretty terrifying at times, but we'll get there!

Sorry about not revealing more stuff sooner but we don't want to disappoint people. Imagine how you'd feel if we promised you a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and when you got there, there would just be a bucket full of rusty iron :)

All I can say is that there's more cool stuff than GI in the pipeline but we can't reveal what until we're absolutely sure that everything works.

I think we'd need a crystal ball to be able to predict the exact date :) The 1st of November is a self-imposed goal, but whether we'll be able to meet that deadline is a question nobody can answer right now - it depends on a lot of factors, one of which is how many bugs the beta testers find in each new beta version.

The guys are working like crazy to get 3.0 under way.

During beta testing, we try to get some decent images and videos made to show you. So here are two videos made of the new sky system, just so you can get a feel of the 3D clouds and 2D clouds of what can easily be done.

Until we have more new releases to the blog, here are 2 videos to enjoy:

3D clouds: Sunrise and sunset

2D Clouds: Moving clouds and cloud formations

2D clouds are 2-dimensional, i.e. textures on a sky dome object.

3D clouds are 3-dimensional so you can fly through them.

Not enough?  People were asking about flicker with GI (common problem when adding GI to an realtime rendered animation), and requesting videos to see if there is any...seems to me this shows the fantastic ability to have GI in video with no flicker.  Just by adding 1 second per frame...i would say that is enough for me.  Cannot imagine what had to go into making this work...congratulations Lumion team.

Hi Truls,

Thanks for the update. The GI lighting solution seems reasonably fair though not convincing yet. Perhaps the animation would have benefited if ambient occlusion was developed to a level where you can begin to distinguish various object interfaces. Right now the edges are merging a lot, thereby killing the lighting solution. I see rectangular lights in the animation, should we expect these in lumion 3.0 :-D :-D

Alickn

It's starting to look nice! Although, as alickn, I still think it's still "not there".

I also noticed that some areas are very dark. Can we combine GI with AO to get a more uniform lighting and to better define corners?

BTW, we need a video with moving objects (thar girl barely moves) to see how Lumion 3.0 will handle GI flicker. When there are no moving objects the GI solution does not change and thus there is no flicker.

I remember when Lumion's big selling point was "2 seconds per frame". It has now come to a point where it needs an overhaul of the AA system if it's going to recover that speed. :-D

Looks more like a photo applied to a cylinder.

Hopefully in this version we'll get an option for images to be "always lit", that is, not to be affected by lights. It would be extremely useful for backgrounds.

You can always apply emissiveness and play with roughness to get this to work (using the custom/ standard material set).

I do not think reflection has made it into L3.0, with only 4days left to the launch, this is a far fetched dream. Like you, I am very disappointed on this one. But let's wait for Remko, he might surprise us. Remember, the team keeps reassuring us that we are going to have a lot of things in L3.0. I for one, so far, appreciate the new character content, and the clouds, there seems to be more improvement on plants and grass library. As for functionality, we still have to wait for more revelations. I hope there will be an extension on the early bird aspect.

Keep the faith, guys.

The new clouds are just one among many other new features in the upcoming 3.0.

You have not seen anything yet.

There are many tiny tweaks and changes too but at some point we need to focus on the big things and make sure Lumion 3.0 will blow you away. Fortunately results look good and I think it will blow you away and we even have some stuff you never imagined.

the new features will really get more interesting as we approach the release.

So, we don't know yet what the big new features in 3.0 will be, but we can be sure they're going to "blow us away", that they will be "more interesting" than what we have seen until now, and that they're something "we never imagined".  8)

I'm waiting to be blown away.

Hello to you all
I am one of the most demanding of myself than you
Please refer to your software's ability to automatically add lights.
So it works. Light is a day off. If you start the night light will automatically turn on.
It can add light to the light. Or add a button to light the capabilities of handling the situation, day or night, to recognize and act spontaneously.

Thanks
I am impatiently waiting for the response from your team

I can't help myself but this does not look like global illumination. There is color bleeding yes, but all other stuff just looks like a higher ambient light to me.

Can we see just on light or illuminated box in one room so we see the scattering? Will normal and specular maps also affected by indoor lights?

I can't decide yet if its a good GI solution or not. I will update anyway I guess hehe...

It's global illumination. However it's not similar to a ray traced solution which takes hours to complete. There are two main differences. First, it only calulates a single bounce and second, the bounced light does not have shadows. So, in short it's not as good a Vray for example but it does make the images better which is the whole point I guess. Anything more accurate would take more time up to the point where people will just not render with radiosity at all. In the attached image you can see how the light bounces from the floor.

ah cool. thanks. looks good! all the geometry and textures of the video scene were so distracting to see the effect. if you would have released only the shot people would have asked for the complex scene.  :-D
of course i dont compare vray with realtime graphics. i would compare with other game engines. :)

EDIT: The floor should be brighter I guess. The transition from bright spot is to harsh I think.

Improvements looked convincing enough to me, so finally i decided to be an early bird. To be honest, it was a very difficult decision for me because of the bumpy upgrading cost during these economical hard times.
I'm sure that it's absolutely worthy to upgrade, but please never forget that a lot of loyal users have been experiencing the same dilemma, and need to make financial self-sacrifice to upgrade.
After all, i hope there'll be no Lumion 3.5 upgrade fee, and more budget-friendly upgrade costs for Lumion 4.

Hi All,

We are one day away from Lumion 3.0 official launch. Of the secrets revealed so far, the following are fairly interesting to have.
1. Lumion clouds/sky
2. Lumion GI
3. Lumion character library.
4. Additional plant library.

Other improvements are;
4. Improved water quality
5. Improved user interface
6. Camera sound mute function.
7. Additional stock objects library

Have we seen the last of lumion's new features? If yes, the above come at an upgrade price of 1799 Euros for lumion ultimate?  ???:-\

Just to be clear, we have not officially announced a set release date.

We have, however, announced a release in November.

We also want to release more news.

Judging if the sum of new functionalities are worth it or not to upgrade, will be individual decisions. However the high amount of upgrades are a good indication.

Anyways, here are a few more images from early 3.0 beta.

With all due respect, these upgrades are nice.  But, without reflections that are accurate I will continue struggling to sell projects using Lumion.... My clients are used to vray and dont care from their point of view how long it takes ME to finish the project.  Their comments are "send it to a render farm if its taking too long...."  I would LOVE to not have to do that and be able to rely on Lumion!  I reaaaaalllly hope you are holding this close to the vest for a grand reveal!!! :-P

One cool "one more thing" thing would be a simple support for multiple GPU but okay.. ;)

I wonder if Lum3 got released in around 10 days because I could use it to render all the stuff for the Bekerman contest then. This Museum would really benefit from the planar reflections for all participating guys there.

I plan in 5 days for rendering and post so this would be really awesome. It also would be a great showcase if such a contest would be first which features the new version. But I can understand if it done when its done and Lum2 isnt bad. ;)

Hi Sacha, planar essentially means flat. So a mirror or the top of a dining table as on the rendering in the newsletter would be perfectly suited for this effect, but organic shapes would not be.

After applying the effect to a clip, you basically pick a flat surface that you want to add the planar reflections to.

Just bear in mind that performance will suffer if you add many planar reflections as each additional surface menas that the models that are being reflected will have to rendered once more.

Hello again,
In the news letter i received, it says:
"New tree clusters will let you populate an area with dense forest in seconds" what does that mean ?
Is it an object as Aaron did in the past ? Or can we choose what kind of tree we want to populate a zone ?

- Did the "Ctrl Click" to plant many trees works now on our mesh or only with the lumion terrain as in 2.5 ?

Regards

Yes, Aaron's 8 tree cluster models + 3 tree trunk models. There are some renderings of them in one of my earlier posts (see image 007):
http://lumion3d.com/forum/new-features-wish-list/vegetation-without-trunk-and-90-turn/msg39926/#msg39926 (http://lumion3d.com/forum/new-features-wish-list/vegetation-without-trunk-and-90-turn/msg39926/#msg39926)

These tree cluster models are intended for use as a shortcut for making distant forests/woodland, so that you don't bring your PC to it's knees by placing individual trees.

- Did the "Ctrl Click" to plant many trees works now on our mesh or only with the lumion terrain as in 2.5 ?
It's currently working the same way as in 2.5, i.e. only on the 'native' Lumion terrain. I hope the developers will consider overhauling this after 3.0 is released.

Morten, will we be able to load our own sound files and position them in the 3D space?
In the initial 3.0 version, you will only be able to use sounds from the built-in Sound Library as 3D sounds. Which reminds me that I should start a thread in the Wish List section, so that people can post their requests for stock sound effects (I remember that you already posted some suggestions, car engine sounds, sounds of people enjoying themselves etc):
http://lumion3d.com/forum/new-features-wish-list/the-definitive-wish-list-for-the-sound-library/ (http://lumion3d.com/forum/new-features-wish-list/the-definitive-wish-list-for-the-sound-library/)

In addition to the 3D sounds, you will also be able to add a 2D sound (e.g. a pre-recorded voice-over or background music) to your movie.

IMPORTANT:
Please note that sound will only be available in Lumion Pro 3.0, not in Lumion 3.0.

Thanks for the preview Truls. What a difference reflections make! Just a question - will we be able to apply reflections globally 'by material', or will we have to select surfaces one at a time.
For instance, if I am rendering a house, will I have to select each window separately, or can I elect for all glass material to reflect?

if you were to pick an effect for a movie (animation) yea it might not be helpful to have it enabled in build mode. but if i want to take one shot and render it with the effect, having the effect enabled helps a lot in choosing the right options and the right camera angle . . . .etc

just my opinion :P

Hi Michael, in Lumion 3.0, almost all Weather/Sky/Cloud/Fog/Camera/Shadow settings have been made into Movie effects which can either be applied to video clips or copy-pasted to the Photo section which now has its own effects stack.

Since you no longer have access to all those settings in Build mode, it's useful to have a button that lets you view Build mode with all effects turned on.

Apart from being able to see the Weather/Sky/Cloud/Fog/Camera/Shadow settings, another example is the ability to be able to modify reflective materials while the Reflection effect is visible.

I really wonder if we're gonna be able to control the reflection rate of these planar reflections. I hope that planar reflections didn't only come for mirrors or other 99.9% reflective metals.

Hi portrait, planar reflections rely on the reflectivity parameters of materials in your scene, so if you apply this effect to a wooden floor, the veins of the wood will distort the reflection and the Reflectivity slider of the wooden material will let you adjust the reflection amount.

I'm also very curious about the unexpected, but very welcomed feature, 3D sounds. Are they going to be movable? Walking&talking guys, flying&singing birds would create an incredible atmosphere!

It's currently not possible to move the 3D sounds during animations, but I have asked Ferry if he wants to implement this (we're going to need it anyway at some point, e.g. engine sounds for moving cars etc). For this to work, it would also have to be made possible to select more than one 'object' (sound/model etc) while animating things in your scene.

Hi Derek, here's how it works:

You apply the Reflection effect to a clip in Movie mode or to a photo in Photo mode.

This effect lets you assign multiple planes that use planar reflections. All you need to do to add a reflection plane is to click a (+) button followed by a click on a random polygon in your scene, e.g. one of the windows in your scene.

The clever thing is that any polygons with the same orientation and position as the assigned reflection plane will now be able to use those reflections, regardless of which materials they use.

In other words, as long as the windows in your scene follow the same position/orientation as the assigned reflection plane, all the windows will now have reflections, even if they are separate surfaces with different materials.

You are not losing reflections in Lumion 3.0 - you are gaining accurate reflections on planar surfaces. Reflections on non-planar models such as a sphere or a cylinder will still work the same way as in Lumion 2.5.

In 90% of all cases you wont see any differece using a cubemap with even some blurry reflections vs a acurate reflection on a non-planar surface.

Lumion is still real-time so you have to do a trade-off here between performance and visuals.
If you get proper reflections for all surfaces next question would be how deep will it go?

Imagine a mirror facing a mirror. THis can be really extensive in cimputing.

I agree. Although in the future it would be cool to get like a bar with 5 stars and you choose the level of detail or depth to your reflections rendering. Its not bad to dream about future stuff, specially with a team like the lumion team, all dreams come true :)

It basically lets you apply an MP4 video to the diffuse texture slot in a Standard material. You can use the usual sliders in the Standard material to adjust the look.

And before you ask, the MP4 format unfortunately doesn't support an alpha mask (Only QuickTime MOV files which have been saved with "Millions of colours+" are capable of that - the "+" sign indicates that the alpha channel is included).

Does this mean we will be able to apply a movie / film / news (as MP4 texture) to a TV set? This would really bring internal scenes to life. Perhaps you could even have a setting to allow you change channels by changing the screen texture. Just a thought. ;)

You're welcome to suggest other formats in the Wish List section.

(I guess MP4 was the most convenient format for the developers to implement as it's already supported in the Movie export function)

Hi morton, and everyone. I just remembered something that i hoped would be implemented in the future and i want to know if it is available in lumion 3: which is the ability to save your own model and / or your own texture in the models or materials slot inside lumion. It woul be so cool to make your own category and call it favorates an place textures that you bought from cgtextures or other websites. I know the feature is already there but what i meant the ability to put it in the texture library area so that you can pick up that material you always use and use it in any project you are working on.

Any chance thats gonna be available in the new lumion ? I think it would save a lot of time if you use many materials and you dont need the built in mats.

Thank you :)
Sorry for asking alot but im so excited :p

No, this will not be available in Lumion 3.0.

However, there will be a new function:

New 'Load/Save material set' function: You can now save materials in a scene to a file, and then automatically apply those materials to another imported model provided that they use the same material names in your 3D modelling application.

Use Handbrake. It's free, accepts any video as input, and the output is a standard .mp4 file.

If you have an image sequence instead of a video, first convert it to video with VirtualDub.

I'm very sorry but I haven't got time to reply to all your questions, and you guys are obviously also spending a lot of your time trying to second-guess how new functions will work.

Every time I reply to forum posts, it unfortunately means fewer sounds in the built-in Sound Library, fewer models in the built-in Model Library and more bugs in the final version (as I have less time to help with the beta testing).

So please be patient and wait for more information to be made public :)

So Lumion crashes when you try to render an MP4!?

I don't recall any bug reports like that before (unless the hardware did not meet the minimum requirements for running Lumion).

We take crashes extremely seriously, so I'd be grateful if you could post more details in the Bug section of the forum, so we can investigate your report as soon as possible.

I think if Lumion makes  real-estate buyers/builders in the whole world expect to see walk-through videos of all projects, from garages to sky scrapers, then the demand for visualization will be so much increased you will probably get even more work ;)

I rendered the above image in 12 seconds 1080p on my gtx580.
It has 3 reflection planes and GI set on 50 or so meters with a very large falloff.
