Title: GTX 580: Driver crashes after 1-2 minutes in Build mode
Post by: rony3166 on November 23, 2012, 04:58:19 am
hello, im new to lumion and im testing it out before buying.

i have a i7-3930k with 16gb ram and a GTX 580 4gb. im working at 1920x1080 resolution.

when im working in build mode at 100% resolution, my video driver crash and my screen goes blank. my FPS doesn't drop below 40. i dont get lag hang ups. just a sudden crash.
is this normal? am i not suppose to be working/building at 100%.

when i work at 50% it lasts much longer before a crash. but at 100% i cant work more than 1-2 minutes max.

any ideas or solutions are much appreciated.

Thanks

Looks like power supply failure.

Hi rony3166, the first step is to figure out if it only crashes while using Lumion or if it's a problem that also affects other demanding 3D applications. If the latter is the case, your graphics card may be faulty (or it's simply not getting enough voltage/amps as byzantium1200 suggested).

We usually recommend that people run OCCT in order to determine if this is the case or not:
http://www.ocbase.com/index.php/download (http://www.ocbase.com/index.php/download)

This application includes stress tests of your GPU, CPU and RAM.

I have a coolermaster silent pro 700w.

what exactly do I look for in the test utility to determine if it's a power supply or a faulty video card?

I run sketch up and cad and never have this problem. but that's probably because they are not 3d heavy.

thanks

Please run the GPU:3D, POWER SUPPLY, CPU:OCCT and CPU:LINPACK tests in this order for say, 30 minutes each.

Remember to turn on "Error check" in GPU:3D.

Any errors will be reported in the log file that OCCT generates.

Though a small possibility don't forget to check all your fans for dust clotting, especially the ones that open downwards. Motherboard shuts down to prevent damage from overheating (had it once).

ok, i figured it out. i opened my computer case and i worked in lumion at 100% for an hour with no crash. so it was overheating. i guess there isnt enough ventilation in my system.

but i cant leave it open forever. how can fix this? more fans?

The first step is to find out which component is overheating.

Fortunately, OCCT also monitors the temperature of the GPU and CPU while running the tests.

On my machine, I put two more cooler, playing air over the processor (i7) and video card (GTX-580).

Before I do this, I realized the internal coolers accelerating much when comaçava working hard.

EDIT: They work with speed reduced to not make much noise.

Fans common, those that are used within the enclosure of the cpu.
Usually they are 12 volts. I turned on at 6 volts, so that they spinning up with lower speed and less noise.
