Title: Microsoft Kinect as 3D scanner
Post by: Simoni on September 04, 2012, 02:58:25 pm
Apologies if this has been covered before.

See  kinectfusion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quGhaggn3cQ#ws)
Anyone know if the Microsoft Kinect is commercially available as a 3D scanner ?
I have read that there is something in development, or maybe available called "Kinectfusion" which connects the Kinect to a PC and builds up an expanding 3D textured model as more of the object or space is scanned.
Sounds amazing, I think its optimised for about 2m range but it seems to scan ok at larger distances. Maybe this would be a good way of capturing ornate interiors , or small urban environments quickly..wonder what the file size would be like?

Just noticed in the above video at 3.13 ,reproduction of scene as a textured 3D model, amazing, then with virtual light added.....amazing!
How long would it normally take just to model and texture that tabletop scene, this appears to be done in seconds....and then rendered in Lumion of course.
