Title: Sketchup models - exploding groups
Post by: vegardnataas on March 27, 2012, 12:25:48 pm
Hi, I have created a 3d model of an old house with detailed tile effect roofing. The Sketchup file is about 10 mb, but it does not import to Lumion properly (roofing tiles are not shown). If I explode all the groups, however, I can import the file, but then the Sketchup model turns to 250 mb and almost impossible to work with. Is there any reasonable explanation for the models with groups will be more difficult to import?

I can also mention that the collada file is 1,2 gb and that I understand that this is to much for Lumion. I wondered if there is any other format that will have smaller size.

Hi vegardnataas, if I understand you correctly, everything works fine apart from the roof tiles, but the exported DAE file is 1.2gb.

It's difficult to say why the roof tiles aren't imported without having access to the SU model.

Some suggestions:

Did you already run the CleanUp3 script?

The CleanUp3 script will get rid of duplicate materials/textures and all the unused stuff in the scene, and will almost certainly reduce the exported file size.

In your case, it sounds like it might be best to export the detailed roof tiles as a separate object though.

I wondered if there is any other format that will have smaller size.
If you have SketchUp Pro, try exporting to FBX instead (Units = cm).
