Title: New GTX 680 card now hitting the market
Post by: peterm on March 23, 2012, 08:56:05 am
EVGA have announced release of a GTX680 (http://www.evga.com/articles/00669/#GTX680) with wow performance, plus enhanced render quality.  See here.  No doubt other manufacturers won't be far behind, if not already producing.

3 x the cuda cores as the 580 that must help Lumion.

is there alread a 3gb version of it, preferable with a more silent cooling system ?

Hi ^^
Yes there is   ;)
http://www.amazon.fr/MSI-N680GTX-PM2D2GD5-Graphique-DL-DVI-I-DL-DVI-D/dp/B007N152BQ (http://www.amazon.fr/MSI-N680GTX-PM2D2GD5-Graphique-DL-DVI-I-DL-DVI-D/dp/B007N152BQ)

I'm not quite sure that performance will be 3 times faster ... but it is a little bomb ....

Hummm... i will not forget you "Phantom 580 3Go" you'll stay in my mind forever...

Does somebody want to buy my phantom 3Go ? I'll make a price lol  :-D

3 x the cuda cores as the 580 that must help Lumion.

The Cuda cores on the GTX 680 are completely different from those on the GTX580.
It's also Kepler GK104 GPU based. No way it's going to offer 3 times the performance
of the 580. I'd expect it to be 30% faster at the most (gladly proven wrong though!).
If you want the best I'd advise to wait until Nvidia starts the rollout of the new GK100
GPU's which should offer proper upgraded performance compared to the 580 high-end range.

680 GTX is retro compatible  with  PCI express 2.0 ... we won't be oblige to change our motherboards...... that's a good news  :-D

Powerconsumption seems good.
Also the 1st benchmarks seem to indicate it's tesselation performance is quite impressive.
Useless for Lumion but excellent news for those into DX11 game-engine based projects.
I wonder if Lumion will fetch the non-native FXAA in buildmode with reasonable performance.
That would be really great news.

ok gurus, what does this really mean if i am spec'ing out a "Lumion" machine right now? Is the gtx 680 better or worse than the gtx 580?

i am primarily concerned with Lumion performance above all else. faster render times are what i am after.

thansk,

bob

should be far better. benchmark tests on gamestar showed increse from 30 to 100 % depending on the games ...
than there is less power consumption. if i were to buy a new grafic card today i would buy a gtx 680. but maybe i would wait for a more silent cooling system ...

According to this thread, the GK110 will have 3072 CUDA Cores (twice the number of cores of the GK104 GPU).

I guess with the right overclocking tools and the know how you could just burn down the whole house with this thing.

Yeah for sure.
Now lets hope:

1) Nvidia doesn't again stall these because of printing issues
2) This thing doesn't require its own nuclear reactor
3) Nvidia puts so much memory on it, people will laugh for months about how overkill it is until they find it's actually quite nice to have.

yes, i got the first one palit gtx680 4gb

test with the same pc and same scenes with resolution 2x1980x1200.

zotac gtx570 Amp 1.25 gb against palit gtx680 4gb.

scene 1. with a lot of lights  16552 k verts

gtx 570 FPS with shadows on 1-2
gtx 680 FPS with shadows on 1-2
gtx 570 FPS with shadows off 10-15
gtx 680 FPS with shadows off 12-15

gtx 680 FPS with lights off (Layer) 18

gtx 570 movie render 2h.35 24.46 s/
gtx 680 movie render 1h.25 13.46 s/

gtx 680 movie render with lights off (hide layer)  0 h.37 5.89 s

scene 2. with no lights but a big scene 6462 k  verts

gtx 570 FPS 6-12
gtx 680 FPS 10-12

gtx 570 movie render 10h.18 4.06 s/
gtx 680 movie render   7h.45 3.46 s/

scene 3. with lights but a smaler scene  5649 k  verts

gtx 570 FPS 20-22
gtx 680 FPS 22-24

gtx 570 movie render 3h.22 6.87 s/
gtx 680 movie render 2h.50 6.13 s/

need reference scene for tests!!!

test with normal takt GPU shader etc.
i tryed with overglocked there ist not really any change

i test the new 2.2.1 ultimate with the same scenes.

result:
2.2.1 ultimate is a little bit slower maybe 0,1 % but it`posible because if have now 3 24" monitors with 1920x1200 resolution bevor 2 monitors

And if you put those lights all on shadow cache?

Still look like Lumion likes the 680.

Hi ilwedritschel, thank you so much for taking the time to test the GTX680 so thoroughly!

I wonder why scene 1 is so much faster to render on the GTX680...?

And you're obviously right, we do need an official scene for benchmarks, so that people who need to upgrade know what kind of performance and render times they can expect.

Thanks for testing. I expected the 680 to be way faster than my 570, but looks like I'd rather wait for the 780... the difference is not enough to justify the upgrade... except for scenes with lots of lights (your test scene #1).

i think it´s the amount of vert 16552k it is more than the double of the other scene

Thanks for adding the vertex counts to the scene descriptions. Based on your test, it seems that the 680 is way faster for high-polygon scenes then.

GTX690 announced.
Dual Kepler based, 2GB each (4GB total).

But Lumion can't take advantage of dual-GPUs, right? My guess is it will only use one GPU with its respective 2GB of RAM.

Post by: Aaron on April 30, 2012, 04:29:33 pm
Yup, sadly so.
But since it's an insane card anyways, it's still interesting to some extend to follow their releases from that perspective. Clearly some boundaries for board manufacturing have been conquered
and that's very good news. Lets hope the same goes for the GK110 :-)

From some stuff I was reading recently it sounds like we should wait a bit for the GK110.

Double the cores, probably won't have double the memory but that will eventually arrive, so something around 8GB would start to sing  :)

Zotac has now a 4GB single GPU too.

http://www.computerbase.de/news/2012-05/zotac-bringt-geforce-gtx-680-mit-4-gbyte-und-gtx-680-amp/ (http://www.computerbase.de/news/2012-05/zotac-bringt-geforce-gtx-680-mit-4-gbyte-und-gtx-680-amp/)

I will have to migrate maybe to Tesla in the future because they crippled the computing performance. But for Lumion renderings it will be great if you have heavy scenes with lots of large textures.

A Whitepaper on the Kepler GK110 has been released by Nvidia:

http://www.geeks3d.com/20120517/nvidia-kepler-gk110-architecture-whitepaper-2880-cuda-cores-and-compute-capability-3-5/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TheGeeksOf3d+%28The+Geeks+Of+3D%29 (http://www.geeks3d.com/20120517/nvidia-kepler-gk110-architecture-whitepaper-2880-cuda-cores-and-compute-capability-3-5/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TheGeeksOf3d+%28The+Geeks+Of+3D%29)

Some very interesting new features although I'm not sure the focus on accuracy is such a good thing in tandem with Lumion' hatred against the current Quadro series  :D
