First Night Animations - FINALLY!
Small clips at 1280x720.
Still working on environment and animation entourage, effects, etc.
Working with lights has not been that bad once i got going and acclimated.

Nice.
I like the last one with the shot coming first from the moon view.
-
It´s very nice!
great lighting!
dont forget to hide the "moon walkers". On the second video there is some people walking and going nowhere.
-
Thanks.
Yah, im just getting to the entourage stuff now. populating with trees, people, etc.
funny, we call them "moonwalkers" too.

Looks great! Maybe a few more lights? It still seems a bit dark overall.
A couple of questions:
How many lights are in the scene, and how is performance ( say, compared to a daylight scene)
when creating renders and animations?
And what hardware are you using?
Nice work!
-
right on...i have lightened the scene a bit. thanks.
How many lights?
about 87 right now
- some spot, some omni
performance has been fine. it does seem to take a bit longer to produce the highest quality animations that i like to do but i have been doing 1280x720 tests of those short clips around an hour or so i wanna say??? i should have paid attention.
i am using this ORIGIN PC:

http://lumion3d.com/forum/index.php?topic=1479.0 (http://lumion3d.com/forum/index.php?topic=1479.0)
Researched custom build shops like ava, alienware, falcon northwest, cyberpower, etc.
ended up choosing ORIGIN PC based on the reviews i found. They are a newer company that formed from 3 ex-Alienware execs.
We were getting down to crunch time and none of us here are hardware gurus but i think this will meet our needs for LUMION.
very good sales experience with ORIGIN PC. very helpful. sounds good so far...
i went with the 3gb gtx 580 graphics card because it is the most powerful single core card right now and LUMION only uses one core...or something like that as mentioned above
let me know if u know anything different though. please feel free to scrutinize. i really enjoy learning the details when i can.
8-10 days to build, 4 days to ship from florida.

There are two things I would have done differently: i7 processor, although this isn't a big deal and it would have bumped the cost up about $500 or so depending on which version you got. I think you should drop the 320gig HD and get an SSD for programs and a larger HD for storage. Hard drives are cheap nowadays, and the Solid State Drive is such a huge performance gain for any system, expensive per gig but worth it. Intel makes a great SSD.

cpercer, thanks for the suggestions. i ordered this in july 2011, so i would do those things differently now. BTW, i am very happy with ORIGIN and the PC. It's been awesome!

still adding lights, etc.
still WIP.

Looking good!
You might consider using a "luminous material" on the glass/windows
to make them glow? Or if performance hit is not too much, place lights inside
to make the bldg. glow.

A while back Ferry and Remko mentioned a way to make a room seem voluminous by using a special texture. I wonder if they could comment?
-
Looking good, I might suggest a little more ambient shadows as it looks a little flat. This will help in differentiating planes and add a bit of death to the walls that are long and one material. Otherwise, looking good!

Nice scenes....not used to seeing birds eye night shots...overall darn good.
There has been something bugging me about the Lumion sky. The night shots expose the dome (if that is what it is)...it is too small. When the camera tilts everything moves, the sky and the entourage and that throws me off, feels like you are in a box. Considering the distance to those stars......they don't move at all. Not sure how one is going to deal with limitless space so I guess a solution is not easy.
Thanks Robert

Thanks to all for the feedback. I really appreciate it.
cbarch, cpercer:
I wanted to illuminate ALL of the windows but the night scene is supposed to show an event in the evening that would not included the "Educational Wings" which are all of the windows to the left and right of the entrance. The "Event" would be taking place in the middle of the building in the large group spaces and the other parts of the building would be locked down. But, i am going to make the argument that we show it lit up for artistic purposes. i agree it would make the whjole thing look better.
modelhead:
I am struggling with the sky issue too, but in the end, i just hope it wont distract from the animation. maybe i just need to re-think the views to limit that exposure.
Brian: i hope you meant "depth" and not "death" ;) haha. But yes, i agree. i need to work with the settings as well as ALL of the textures to get a better over-all feel. Those settings need to be adjusted for each clip, it seems, because the effect is much different when closer or farther away. I am going to post a new test and see what people suggest as far as getting those settings for diffuse and ambient shadows tweeked for difft view distances. i really want to figure out a good rule of thumb to get the best look.
thanks,
bob
