Hi Jordan

I use Dell M6500
CuadCore Xi940 (8cores)
32 Gb Ram
NVidia 5000M 2 Gb

Lumion runs quite well in this workstation, I hope this information will be suitable for you

I run a Clevo x7200:

Core i7 970 (Hyperthreaded 6-core)
12 gigs triple channel RAM
Nvidia GTX 485M 2gig
17" glossy widescreen

This is a completely cusomizable desktop component laptop form factor beast!  The above configuration costs less than the Dell M6500 (now M6600.)  It is available with the latest Intel chips and Nvidia cards from a vendor of your choice.

I recently ordered two Malibal Satori (Clevo P170 HM) laptops from malibal.com.  Each is about half the weight of my x7200, which is about 14 lbs.  They are available with Intel mobile components including 2nd gen chips and the latest Nvidia cards.  They top out at around $4000 fully loaded, still less than the Dell.  I must compliment the folks at Malibal.  The service was fast and friendly with good tech support.  The computer was well assembled and works flawlessly.

The framerates for the mobile Nvidia cards are only slightly lower than the desktop versions for simple to moderate scenes.  For heavier scenes, use layers to raise framerates.  Movie generation is slightly slower or nearly the same as desktop movie generation (image sequence and mp4 output.)

I use Autodesk Building Design Suite 2012, Adobe Production Premium CS5.5, Sketchup, Vue 9, City Engine 2010 and Lumion, of course.  Although, I would much rather use Lumion 2! :-D

Thank you lofts and cpercer for your reply and help.. What i see so far,my options for a video card on  a laptop are:Considering only nvidia cards

 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 560M 1.5GB GDDR5

 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 580M 2GB GDDR5

I can not find better videocardbenchmark than these for laptops. In conclusion, for medium to small/ simple scenes  those laptops may work but not too efficently . I guess i need to find a videocard that has more than the minimum 1,500 PassMark points for small scenes, ideal 2500 or more ... But i do not think that exists(more than 2500 points passmark) for laptops in order to work with lumion with no problems... I guess is better to get a desktop.. I will miss the mobility of a laptop :( maybe in a near future.. Anyways thanks for your responses.. Any other suggestions, are more than welcome!! Thanks..
To lofts and cpercer.. What are you experiences working with your laptops and lumion? Are you scenes small/simple when use with your laptops?again thanks in advance for your help!

I think I gave you the wrong impression regarding using a laptop with Lumion.  Please review the following post for a direct comparison between my desktop and my laptop:

http://lumion3d.com/forum/index.php?topic=1269.0 (http://lumion3d.com/forum/index.php?topic=1269.0)

Both machines are custom built with high performance components.  Note that the video cards, while vastly different (desktop vs. laptop) offer nearly the same performance.  Since I purchased my laptop, Nvidia has released newer high power video cards, including the 580M.  I have the 580M in a Malibal Satori but have not applied the same tests.  I can say with confidence that a laptop with the 580M, a 64 bit OS, and plenty of RAM will handle just about any Lumion file that a desktop can handle.  I am not a Malibal employee, but have had several pleasant purchase experiences within the past two months.  The Malibal Satori with a 580M will satisfy nearly all Lumion users and is even available with a 17" 3D screen.

I often must give live presentations which requires the exact same file on the laptop and the desktop.  I have yet to find a file I cannot open on either one.  My largest scene is the downtown of a city with several large bridges and thousands of trees and several hundred cars.  With all layers visible the framerate drops to 1-3fps, surely larger than a typical scene; however I am able to load the scene and edit successfully.  I'm hoping the improved animation pack in Lumion 2 will allow some traffic action! :-D

Anyway, a good laptop will be perfect for Lumion.

Interesting comments.  The specification info at the NVidia site provides some indications of the differences between laptop and desktop.  There's a big difference in number of cores which would seem a critical factor to hnadling the shading/rendering done by Lumion.  Something like a 560M is more equivalent to a basic GT430 but with slightly faster bandwidth, only 96 cores.  Only the 580M starts to come up to desktop card configuration, but then costs heaps.

However its still hard to tell from that info what real performance is like, especially in the critical time cost area of rendering.

I guess the more you can afford the better off you will be but at the expense of a desktop/workstation with way more bang for the buck.  As cpercer indicates top of the range 580M starts to give some OK performance, would be nice to have laptops that could place in a full fledged v-card.

Jordan emailed me some time ago regarding recommended laptops for Lumion but I suggested he asked you guys.

And I'm glad he did! The posts above should be mandatory reading for anyone who needs to take Lumion on the road - thanks to all of you for sharing your experiences!

Hi Cperder

You're right, Dell are a little expensive than Clevo, but there are some retail sellers where you can find good offers in USA and Australia, where we bought usually our workstations.

There are differences between Dell and other portable worstations, even between M6500 and M6600. We opted to buy another M6500 due the screen resolution on M6600 and others competitors in the higher range are lower than M6500, 1920x1080 against 1920x1200, this possibility offers you take screenshots with a highend resolution before rendering.

Other feature in dell's  M6500 is the amount of Ram you can dispose, 32 Gb against 24 Gb maximum in others.

Regarding Graphic Cards, now are available Quadro 5010M with 4Gb, but only in USA market, in Europe are only available with Quadro 4000M, 2 Gb.

Mountain Workstation and Azken are also specific worktations dedicated to rendering.

Hi guys, thanks for your helpful information.. So far i think that the gtx 580m is the best video card for laptop and mobility (2,017 passmark points).good for medium size scenes. In conclusion, it all depends onthe size of the scene you are working.. It it looks like cpencer had work larger scenes and everything work fine with a gtx 580m video card, thats interesting!!

I will like to share some useful information Morten informed me some time ago.. It help me a lot for my future decision. Thanks morten:http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

"Anything below 1000 PassMark points will usually not be able to render images/videos in Lumion.

For relatively simple scenes, you can get by with a card that has about 1,500 PassMark points

If you want to use Lumion for slightly more complex scenes, you'll need a card with say, at least 2,500 PassMark points (avoid Quadro and FirePro cards).

And very complex scenes would benefit from a card with at least 3,000 PassMark points."

Thanks again for all your responses!

Hi Jordan, for Lumion, Nvidia GTX 580 chipset  (M or not) is probably the best choice, but it depends on the workstation where you will install it. Check carefully the technics requests , specially power consumption and fan specifications, in other case you maybe will reach an overheating and the workstation will collapse.

Good points Lofts.

I wonder though how much RAM is really required to run Lumion.  As stated before, both my machines are running 12gig with no problems.  Also, another reason I chose the Clevo over the Dell or another name brand was because I can upgrade parts without voiding the warranty.  In fact, Malibal encourages tweaking.

I just couldn't justify a $5500 Dell when I could have the exact same thing, minus the RAM capacity of course, for nearly $2000 less.  Besides, the Clevo x7200 is the fastest laptop on the planet.

I checked out both firms. Both sell a rebranded Clevo P170hm as a mobile platform.  Also available is the x7200 which uses a desktop CPU and SLI vid cards.

MSI makes some very nice, affordable gaming machines that fit the bill.

Also, Look at Origin PC:
http://originpc.com/choose-eon-gaming-laptop.asp (http://originpc.com/choose-eon-gaming-laptop.asp)

I purchased a very nice desktop gaming PC that is just awesome. I am no longer a fan of Dell or Alienware(now Dell) when compared to what i can get for the money from MSI and Origin PC.

Take a look and check some recent reviews.

BTW, Origin PC is a company started by former Alienware execs who left and started the company the way they thought Alienware should have been. Once again, i'm not shilling for them but my experience, from sales, to shipping and performance has been the TOPS!

Does the Quadro 1000M meet the minimum requirements to run Lumion?  A quick review of the "product info" page will show you minimum and recommended system specs.

Plus this info (http://lumion3d.com/forum/index.php?topic=2468.0) from Morten about benchmarks.

Morten: can I suggest a sticky (in captials: MINIMUM SPECS FOR LUMION) in General Discussion and link also from Tips and Tricks, with your info  here (http://lumion3d.com/forum/index.php?topic=2468.0) about benchmarks, and also link to this topic and Lumion min specs web page be done so potential users can more easily find a resource to some of the base answers first.  Seems this type of question is coming up quite regularly, which is good = more interest, awareness.

A little advice please, I am looking at a laptop for Lumion and have the opportunity to get one with a 3GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M Graphics Card and i7 cpu, does anyone have any experience with this particular card with Lumion. I think it has 144 cores so not that great but is it good enough? Our main Lumion machine has a 580 so this is to add a backup machine that is Lumion capable also for presentations. Many thanks in advance.

This link is to a graphics benchmark chart from Benchmark. http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html (http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html)
It shows the relative speed so you can compare it to other cards. I have a machine with  GT 9800 so I realise the actual speed of the 555m is just slightly better than that.

I read reviews and researched this machine pretty well I thought, I posted here and on other forums too. I felt this was a pretty good machine and up for the task. Having purchased it I can report that with the latest drivers running windows 7 Lumion doesn't work, we were able to move the licence but got a blue screen of death. I shall try again before selling the machine. Laptops seem so much trickier than desktops.
So my advice is test Lumion on the actual machine before purchase.

awesome benchmark site. thanks!

it looks like the fastest "m" for mobile cards seems to be:

1. Radeon HD 6970M, @ 2,631
2. Radeon HD 6990M, @ 2,583
3. GeForce GTX 485M, @ 2,241
4. GeForce GTX 580M, @ 2,078

i guess my question to the geeks and gurus on here is, what does that really mean regarding the ability to run Lumion??

thanks,

Good afternoon Robert, I hope you are doing well.

I read sometime ago that you bought a desktop PC from Origin Pc.
I am also looking for a desktop PC with almost the same specs and price that you selected for yours. Could you please let me know how is your PC performing with Lumion and other softwares like sketch up, 3d max, Revit, PS, etc.. I will like to know your comments and suggestions!!! I think Origin Pc has the best quality components so far and is around the price range I am looking for, approx $2,500.... Other companies are way to expensive, like Dell,etc..

The laptops prices are not bad in price, but I am going with a Pc to work on larger scenes, maybe later I will buy a laptop for presentations.

Thank you in advanced for you help!!!!

jordon2320,

i meant to review the Origin PC i purchased but never got the time. Let me just say that i have NEVER been so pleased with a computer, from top to bottom, as i have with been with this Origin desktop. I posted the specs on the forum so i wont bore you with details but the gtx 580 graphics card is worth every penny. the performance of the machine has been awesome.

the entire process was painless. the guys on the phone were informative and patient and helped steer me into the perfect build out for the price.

the shipping was incredible. it showed up in a solid wooden box reminiscent of the box that carried the arc of the covenant in raiders of the lost arc. :) not as big of course, but way cool.

i am huge fan now and plan to purchase another machine for home and maybe their rebranded clevo laptops too.

i hope it works out. let us know what you decide.

I too am in the market for a new laptop.  I am currently using a GeForce GTX 285M with 6 g of ram.  I was surprised to see GeForce GTX 285M passmark score is only 901 and I have ran some  large scenes with this machine.   I have some big projects coming up so I think I will bump up to gtx 580.   Anyone here running a Radeon HD 6900M series?  Seems to beat out the geforce M cards on this passmark test.

I was surprised to see GeForce GTX 285M passmark score is only 901 and I have ran some  large scenes with this machine.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with the 285M, Chewbacca. That card is from 2009, and in the reviews they seem to compare it to the GeForce 9800 GTX.

You mentioned that it handled large scenes well. How large were the scenes in terms of the total vertex count? And what sort of frame rates were you getting and what was the resolution of the Lumion window? (Turn on the FPS button in the Settings menu, and look for the vertex number in the top right corner).

TIP: Performance is very much affected by the resolution of the Lumion window. The lower the resolution, the better your framerate. I assume you're using an MSI GT660? If so, the maximum resolution is 1366 x 768. If you try to connect it to an external monitor with a higher resolution, eg, 1920x1200, the framerate in Lumion will be significantly worse.

All i meant was i ran big scenes with this card, i would not say well.   i would have the resoultion at the lowest as well as the quality.   thanks for the tip on the external monitor.   i will post some vextex numbers when i get a chance.

Just before I attempt to return it to Dell or put this laptop on eBay, can anyone tell me if a Dell xps L702x i7 8meg ram with Nvidia 555m 3gb should be able to run Lumion. We are finding it crashes even when loading a clear landscape and its a blue screen, the drivers are the latest that dell distribute but not the latest Nvidia offer.
Is there any other supporting software needed for Lumion? It just runs on our desktops.
Any help gratefully received.

This laptop uses Optimus technology, ie, 2 graphics cards: a slow and a fast one. You need to specify that Lumion should use the fast Nvidia card in the graphics card settings.

Search for "Optimus" in the forum to find out how to do this.

Many thanks Morten, I have found the Nvidia control and sorted it out, still sightly under whelmed by the laptop thought and most definitely underwhelmed by Optimus technology and the control of it offered by Nvidia.

In general SLI and Optimus do not reall improve the stability of your system.

I have the M555 and have got a good result with Lumion thanks to Mortens advice.
My general feeling is that more is better and would go with i7 and the faster card.
However, the m555 does work.

Good call, I forgot to mention to Arch-ion that the MSI GX780 ships with power-saving Optimus technology, ie, 2 graphics cards: a fast Nvidia 555M card for 3D applications and a slow Intel card for word processing, web browsing etc.

@Arch-ion: If you opt for the MSI laptop, you'll need to specify that Lumion should use the fast 555M card. Here's how to do that:

Wow, some spec for a laptop, that should do it.
The only change I would really recommend is an ssd as the main drive a series 3 240.
Can I ask what the cost was?

Well, I bought a Clevo W370ET with I73820QM processor and GTX660M GPU, but cannot run Lumion with it. Is it possible to solve the problem or the Laptop doesn't work anyway with Lumion??

How can I set the GPU to play Lumion?
I really don't understand this because the minimum requirements are at least 3000 points in benchmark, but GTX660M has almost 4000 points.. What is wrong here?

Any help please?....
Thanks
CJ Arq  :)

Hi janecocarlos, please read this post (search for 'Optimus'):

Which benchmark is this?

Your GTX 660M has 1635 PassMark points which should be enough for simple scenes (i.e. 1,500 points). There's more information here:

Hi manilynpacis11, you can verify if your Toshiba PC meets the minimum requirements by reading this Knowledge Base article (https://support.lumion.com/hc/en-us/articles/360003476793-What-kind-of-computer-does-Lumion-need-).

There is also a link to a blog article which recommends specific brands.
