Title: Crash while importing from Sketchup
Post by: Alain on October 16, 2011, 07:08:36 pm
Hi all

I export a sketchupmodell to the *.dae format (did it like here http://sketchupvrayresources.blogspot.com/2011/09/tutorial-sketchup-to-lumion.html (http://sketchupvrayresources.blogspot.com/2011/09/tutorial-sketchup-to-lumion.html)).
The file has about 6 MB.

But while importing to Lumion (free version), Lumion always crashes.

Using Win 7 64 Bit, 8 GB RAM, Pentium CPU 2 Cores 2.8 GHz.

Does anybody know what I could have done wrong ?

Kind regards
Alain

Hi Alain, please zip the SketchUp file and attach it to your next post, so that we can have a look.

Interesting (and I understand, also rather annoying). It crashes my Lumion, too (32 bit XP+SP3, so only ~3.4/4Gb RAM, Nvidia 9600 TG with 1Gb).

I tried to clean up the model a bit. Deleted the trees and bushes (you get better ones in Lumion anyway), Purged the model and got it down to 21 Mb. Then used this Cleanup plugin (http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=22920) to do some further clean-up and got this dialog when it was done (I have never seen anything like that) but at least it reduced it to 17Mb (although this is still huge for this file).

Also reset the axes (they were moved) and moved the model above the origin itself. Deleted three more layers (only one contained anything so interesting why the other two had not been purged or cleaned up by the plugin) to no avail. Finally even copied the model to a brand new file but still crashed.

I'll try to investigate further.

OK, I went further and even exploded the whole model to no avail. Then I noticed that you have a certain material (Bod_Parkett) that was huge: over 11 Mb! Now I tried to resample it in the exported folder (it should work) but it still crashed Lumion.

Then I went back to SU and tried to edit texture image (right click on the thumbnail in the material browser) and resampled it in Paint.NET but upon saving (which should reload the modified material in SU), it gave me an "unexpected error" - so I thought I had the culprit.

I completely replaced this material with something else and voilá; it imported into Lumion just fine.

I.e. there is something in that image file which causes errors in various applications. Get rid of it (use a different material - it is ugly anyway if you ask me) and it will be good.

(Sigh...)

Thanks for finding out what caused the crash, Gaieus!

Thank you very mutch Gaieus !

I see that the texture for that floormaterial was huge. I'll keep an eye on huge textures in future ;-)

Kind regards

@Morten: I was also curious... ;) (you never know when you get into a similar trouble so best is to be prepared)

BTW I went back to the original file and did this change (only the "culprit" material swapped with another material already in the file: Bod_Schiffsboden) then did nothing special (not even cleanup) just a simple Purge (under Model info > Statistics) as it should be regularly done anyway and the file went down to 13 Mb and exported from SU just fine and imported to Lumion perfectly.

It's still a bit messy. There are a bunch of simple colours that I do not know where they are coming from. Maybe group/component materials but I did not go further to investigate because I wanted to only make this change to see if that material was indeed the culprit.

Originally there were a whole bunch of small fragments of the asphalt for instance. I have no idea where they came from because they purged perfectly.

@Alain: it was not only the size (as that could have been helped by resampling easier) but that image was buggy.

I'll make sure that the texture is forwarded to Artur so he can check what the underlying problem might be. Lumion should not crash if a texture is unreadable.

Thanks to both of you, for providing the crashing SketchUp file, and for isolating the culprit :)

You welcome. Now maybe a few thoughts on my feature request:

(Ferry and Remko are in charge of feature requests, so I can't comment on that :))

It turns out that the jpg image is saved in CMYK format instead of RGB format.

It shouldn't crash though, so Artur will investigate the problem and try to fix it.

Ah, good. It can cause issues in SU on the Windows system so I understand the error when trying to reload the edited image in SU.

Has anyone still got the original CMYK file which caused the crash?

I can't find it anymore (and other CMYK.jpg files don't make Lumion crash).

When I insert a CMYK image as a scene, I got a crash too. Changing it to RGB does the trick.

Can you upload the CMYK texture that causes Lumion to crash please?

(And do you know which application the CMYK texture was originally saved in?)

1. Explode or bomb model
2. Export to collada and save
3. Import in lumion
4. It works OK

Hi Tomislav,

Are you "that" Tomislav I know? (If so, I hope to see some awesome models rendered by you!)

:)
