Title: Level of Detail in SP6
Post by: Holger Neuhauser on August 17, 2011, 09:20:36 pm
Hi,

when I open a scene with lots of trees in sp6, Lumion does only display a very small amount of them compared to older versions.
If i move in closer, the trees become visible. But no chance to see most of the trees in preview at once.
If I render the scene the trees are all there.

So I think its a level of detail problem.

Can this parameter be adjusted somehow?

Thanks
Holger

i think it is very importand to let the user decide what level of detail he wants to have displayed.
regarding his grafic card and regarding the purpose.

sometimes i would rather change the display resolution to 50% than  see only the nearest foilage.

a slider for setting the lod range would be perfect !

It is hard to create since speedtree isn't really flexible in this way. But we can take a look for the next mayor update. I understand why it is handy to have though. I sometimes also want to quickly see where what is. It is easier for us to create a button that would temporarily draw ALL trees at maximum level.

I like the easier button.

That was easy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YmMNpbFjp0#)

A button would be perfect.

But am I right that  this behaviour of lumion has changed from sp4 to sp6?

Or shouldn´t there be a difference?

In other words: Is it a bug?

Thanks
Holger

I just looked at build 6 and indeed the lod distance is very low.
It's hard to make a forrest if you can't see where you allready placed some trees.
Also the new grass is looking very good but impossible to place because of the low lod. The grass disappears at a few meters!
I think this is a very important feature to improve!
I didn't even mention the impossibility to do realtime presentations with this low lod.
high priority I think.

You can load a scene you made in build 6 in build 4 and see if the realtime shot is different. If it is show the difference please. As you can understand we didn't change the LOD so please confirm it is different now.

I never used Build4, so I don't know how the LOD in that was.
Here is the comparison with Sp2 original and Sp2 build6

This bit is actually done intentional.
The grass looks so good because it's mesh based.
Downside of this approach is fillrate on your GPU.
It lods out almost instantaneous so you can use it for rendered footage,
have tons and tons of it, and not be limited by bad FPS in buildmode.
As for placing it, takes a bit of fiddling about before you get the hang of it
and I'm sure this will get improved in a future update  ;)
It shouldn't dissapaer altogether though.
See the attached screen for the best placing method.
Hope this helps.

Apparently the billboards are not rendered. That is a bug.

it doesnt happen for all foilage. mostly the trees and the detailed bushes ...

the flowers and the low poly bushes dont seem to have any lod at all.
doesnt matter how far i zoom out i can still see them.

is adjustable lod impossible to have ?

wow , now the flowers and bushes do fadeout again ....
there seems to be something strange with the lod-system.

In movie render it is not different. Only in realtime view right now. But we have fixed that.

Hey Mapar,

What technique do you use to create your topography?  It looks great!

Does that mean you have already posted an updated sp6 download?

Thanks

We're testing Build 7 internally at the moment. If we don't find any major new issues, you'll receive a new email with the announcement of the release plus a brief overview of the recent changes as usual.

In Build 7, the SpeedTree billboards will be rendered correctly again and cars won't look like shiny spaceships. You can also place objects much further away from the center of the scene now, and Marc has given the new grass objects a bit more polish.

Apart from those changes (and some other minor fixes), Ferry has added a useful new feature as a bonus, but I'll let that be a surprise which you can read about in the upcoming email :)

sorry to say this,

but there is something wrong with the lod.
sometimes some of the low-poly flowers and bushes are visible to the horizon ( it doesnt matter how far i zoom out )

than at another time i am working with lumion the same low-poly flowers and bushes fade out at some distance ...

this is the second time today this behaviour alters ...

SpeedTree LOD was indeed broken in Build 6, and the upcoming Build 7 will rectify this problem.

Indeed, hence the frantic rush to get Build 7 out :-P

Hey Morten!

I can see I'm good at stating the obvious :-D

I used to drink a lot of coffee on the mornings that we let customers load a new piece.
I worried constantly about our source-safe and the  integrity of the whole build process...did I have a good test bed of customer files...what was I missing??....hmmm...ok lets do a code match guys.....""f" you bruce!" bounced back from the developers bull-pen.

I think it is great to see it happening...it is very exciting...I get caught up in it sometimes just listening to the chatter here.

Cheer!.....Good luck on 7

Hey Mapar,

What technique do you use to create your topography?  It looks great!

Hi,
I keep terrain maps from google maps, or bing maps.
For terrain in 3ds max i use splines to do level curves, and modify "terrain" to do the surface automatically.
