Hi LUMION staff

Thanks for such a magnific program.

About this mp4 movie competition, is there any problem if we use animated objects from other 3D programs.

I am an student, so I only have got the demo version, could I participate with a video with the watermark on it? How long should it last?

again thanks for this great tool.

Hello,

Are we allowed to post-process the video? Like being edited in After Effects?

Or should the video be originally came from Lumion without any post-processing?

Thats' not a problem, you're welcome to import animated objects (the best format is FBX). Just bear in mind that animation is currently only an experimental feature in Lumion - it will later become part of a more advanced Animation plug-in - so at the moment, imported animations just loop for ever.

Could I participate with a video with the watermark on it? How long should it last?

The watermark is not a problem. The duration is up to you :)

Are we allowed to post-process the video? Like being edited in After Effects?

Yup, that's fine.

If you mean participate with other types of media, no, we only accept entries in .MP4 format.

Hi
You say " The movie should be in 1280x720p and saved in MP4 format"
I have some movies already uploaded to YouTube, unfortunately they are 1080p format, is this a problem?
They could be streamed at 720p just by choosing that option in YouTube.
Unfortunately I cant render them again as some of the source files went with my last computer, I cant really take the YouTube movie files and render them again as 720p as I think this would increase greatly the compression artefacts.

1080 is fine too but you'll need to be able to provide an mp4 file

No, you don't have to compose your own music. You can use royalty free music for example. These tracks are available for free, a small price or sometimes a larger price.

There is a problem when you use commercial music without a license since you are not allowed to use that music anyways. Essentially this makes your movie illegal and we can't use it or put it on our website.

Another (free) solution is to use the free background tracks on Youtube and send us a link with the music on youtube and another link with the location of the MP4 download which does not include the music.

1) You are allowed to use still renderings provided that they were originally rendered in Lumion (post-processing in Photoshop, AfterEffects, Piranesi and other 3rd party applications is permitted).

2) UPDATED: If you want to use models from Google Warehouse, you should always ask permission from the person who uploaded the model you'd like to use. That's what we did with the building and some of the furniture in the Alpine Dwelling scene.

Also bear in mind that Google doesn't check if any of the uploaded models infringe on existing copyrights, so if a model uses a commercial texture/mesh that you use in your competition video you would be liable.

From the Terms of Service of Google Warehouse:
http://sketchup.google.com/intl/en/3dwh/tos.html (http://sketchup.google.com/intl/en/3dwh/tos.html)

"8.2 You should be aware that Content presented to you as part of the Services, including but not limited to advertisements in the Services and sponsored Content within the Services may be protected by intellectual property rights which are owned by the sponsors or advertisers who provide that Content to Google (or by other persons or companies on their behalf). You may not modify, rent, lease, loan, sell, distribute or create derivative works based on this Content (either in whole or in part) unless you have been specifically told that you may do so by Google or by the owners of that Content, in a separate agreement."

Hi Morten,
With regard to the file format, can we be allowed to use other internationally recognized file formats such as ".mpg" or ".avi". Most of the video post processing softwares do not easily output to "mp4" which is the file format that you have requested. To archive mp4, file format one would need to convert the file to mp4 using file format convertors. From my experience there is a noticeable video quality loss by the time this exercise is completed. Is there a specific reason as to why the file format is strictly mp4?

Premiere and AfterEffects can output to MP4 at a maximum bitrate of 50Mbps = 6.25Mb/sec. This should make it pretty difficult to spot compression artifacts.

Which video editor are you using if I may ask?

If you won the competition and we needed a completely lossless version of the competition entry (assuming that there were some compression artifacts on the video that you had sent us), we would probably just ask you to render the video as still images.

The point of having the MP4 rule is just that we would prefer a high quality video, so that we don't have to ask you to render still images if you won the competition. Obviously it's still possible to create an MP4 with a very low bitrate and a lot of compression artifacts, so if I were to clarify this rule, it basically just means that we prefer a high-quality video, not a grainy highly compressed one :)

That being said, bear in mind that it's the idea/concept and the quality of the models/textures/composition as a whole that matter in this competition.

Make our jaws drop and don't worry too much if your video is compressed a little 8)

Hi Morten,

Thanks for the feedback.
1. If concept, quality and composition are all that matters and one feels can best deliver the above in a format other than mp4, will they be disqualified for using a different file format?
2. Are 1 star renedered videos acceptable to you provided they are 750p or above?
3. Are previously posted videos acceptable to you provided they are re-linked to the competition forum?
4. Are ajudication results going to be made public to the forum? If not, do we get to see at least the best 10 entries if not all?

It is getting exciting.....

Hi the MP4 720p format is a rule but if you manage to deliver a file which also has similar quality with a different codec (Xvid/DivX/Mov) that will be fine too. We do require 720p resolution though and you'll have to decide for yourself how many stars you will render. It's the endresult that counts so whoever sends in the best looking movie wins. We'll make sure that any movie that looks good will end up on our homepage ofcourse so you'll get some exposure even if you don't win. It does not matter if you created movies a year ago or published them before. All that is a required is a movie made with Lumion we can use on our website and brochures so people can see what you can make with Lumion.

Can we use classical music in our videos? (Is it royalty free?)

Is there any type of standard message to send our videos? will we recieve a confirmation e-mail?

Thank you.

Sure.

Any genre of music is acceptable. Whether it is royalty free or not depends on where you download it from. Always check the license type/terms & conditions on the website that you downloaded the music from. If in doubt, ask the administrator of the website.

Is there any type of standard message to send our videos?

No, just make sure you provide your name/company name (and perhaps additional contact details apart from your email address, just in case) and a link to your video.

will we recieve a confirmation e-mail?

I don't know - Remko is in charge of this.

Adrihal,

Resizing a video from larger to smaller is easy and will cause much less quality loss than if you did it the other way round (from smaller to larger). Do you have access to any video editing software? If not, you can even download a 30-day trial version of any and simply process your video.

Hi Stanislav, there are still 8 days until the competition is over. Is this not enough time to render your competition entry again, but in 1280x720p?

Or is your movie too long for that to be an option?

1080 is fine too but you'll need to be able to provide an mp4 file

Hi All,

Remko said 1080 is fine too provided it is an mp4 file format, are we now back to
strictly 1280???

8 days is not enough to re-render at 3 stars for a 5 minute animation, unless one has a super computer maybe.

No, but when Stanislav says he'd rather re-size his 1080p video than render it again in Lumion, it makes me wonder what is preventing him from rendering it again.

As you can see in his reply above, there seems to be a technical problem, but he hasn't replied to my questions in the other thread yet, so we can't help him any further until he provides more information:

I read the questions - send me information about the car is not very convenient.
Screenshots little black screen that will explain, especially since I was very upset when he was in such a situation. Familiar programmers were not able to understand the problem until I started to write another film. This helped to understand that the trouble in the scene.

I sent you an e-mail with the link of my film but the page where my film is hosted show me that no one has downloaded the film yet. Is there any problem?

Please, answer a.s.a.p. (There is not a lot of time to upload it again)

Remko is busy working on features for Lumion 2 at the moment, so don't panic if it hasn't been downloaded yet - he'll get round to it soon.

Hi Lumion Team,

If say one emails you a link to a competition movie on the 11th hour of 31st October 2011, and you can only download the following day at which day you confirm receipt, will this entry be considered late???

Curious...

No, the time stamp of your email is what matters, so just send an email to [email protected] with your name/company name and the download link before the 1st of November.

Hi Lumion Team,

Is there any kind of confirmation when the video is received? Some of my links have been downloaded more than once (maybe broken links? ???).

When is it going to be announced the winner? will we able to see all the videos that day? I am sure that it is going to be a fantastic new gallery of videos :-D.

Thank you.

If you sent your name/company name and the download link to [email protected] and the email didn't bounce back, it is in Remko's inbox. He might not be able to download all videos until after the 1st of November, but he will contact you if he is unable to download any of your videos, so don't worry too much :)

I'm not sure when the winners will be announced. I guess that depends on how many videos there are, and how close they are in terms of quality.

Should not disclose the animations we present, or you recommend to upload on Youtube and Vimeo?

Hi Lumion Team,

There was an access problem logging in to view or download the competition video from your side
yesterday. I have corrected the restriction on youtube from "private" to "unlisted", which means anyone I send a link to can now access the video. I do not understand why "private" did not work
as from what they say, "private" allows you to share with up to 50 people you send a link to.

Please confirm if you are now able to access the video. I tested the link with my BB, it worked.

Regards,

AlickN

You can upload to youtube, but do not select the "private" option as Lumion Team will not be able to open or download your video as what happened to me yersterday. You should select "unlisted" option. Your video will still remain private, but easily accessible
by Lumion team when you send them a link. If this fails, then you have to select the "public" option. That means all of us can access your video even without a link.

AlickN

Hi, since the rules do not specify an exact deadline timezone I'd like to clarify that the deadline is at Nov1 12:00 (noon) GMT (Greenwitch mean time). At this time it's not Oct 31 anymore, wherever you are.

You will receive an autoreply your mail was received. This means we will try to download your file. If we do not succeed we will contact you. If you hear nothing we have downloaded your movie.

We will upload all the movies to our own vimeo or youtube account and make a gallery so you will be able to see all the movies. We also hope to include a voting system so you can see which movies are liked the most by users (I think youtube already has a tumbs up feature and the gallery can sort based on these votes).

I'd really like to thank everyone participating. It's great to see what movies are made with Lumion.

It's also a great way for us to see where we should improve Lumion. There are a lot of awesome movies which means we are already doing pretty great but a very common problem I see is z-fighting so we'll do extra effort to see how we can resolve these issues automatically.

There's still about 24h left for people to send in their entries an they are still pouring in. I estimate there will be around 100 movies in the end.

Yes you can enter multiple movies. Youtube video is not enough you need to send a high quality mp4 file. The easiest way is to upload to vimeo because they also serve the source mp4 file.

Congratulations for being the top winner. Congratulations
to the second and third winners too.

Welldone guys!

Congratulations to the " Earth entry" as well. I enjoyed watching your cinematography. The
thunder, rain, desert sand, the forests, and the landscape all were enjoyable to watch too.

I really liked the Earth entry. It's amazing. With a bit more tweaking it could have made the no. 1 spot. There are really some amazing images in there. Next time he should condense the movie so there's a little less length but continuous quality throughout the movie and I think it's a good contender for the 2012 award. Obviously a talented guy because the way the shots are set up is really good.

ABOUT earth entry  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am astonished!!!!!!!!!
Far beyond the Lumion capabilities of the average user.
Brilliant use off materials and functions (fountains as rain ,thunders, desert storm etc)
DIVINE lighting
Amazing materials (bump , reflections , motion etc)
Brilliant camera movement and scenography
Excellent and original geometry
I think this video is the best promotion for Lumion’s capabilities.
Can somebody explain me why is not by far the winner of the contest??????

Note that one the result page there is an error!! Some of the honorable mentions are not in there. I think it's a bug in the gallery software. Today we will fix it so all honorable mentions are listed. They are listed in the Youtube channel in the Honorable mentions playlist. Very good work!

I feel as a  Lumion user tell you my opinion about  the criteria for selecting winners for the contest.
I do not want to belittle nobody of the participants, especially the first prize.
All entries that I saw where in the range from very good to great.
Nevertheless I believe that Lumion made a megatons mistake.
I don’t want to go in to details but my conclusion can be summarized in that.

First awarded a very small project for such a great program.
