How do I add custom video to a TV in my Scene?

1. Select the surface of the TV model in your 3D modelling application.
You will need to make sure in the 3D modelling application, that the surface has been mapped with a dummy texture to the same scale as the MP4 video file (roughly). The dummy texture should cover the whole screen and must not tile across it.


2. Import and place the model in Lumion, and assign a Standard material to the TV screen.

3. Click on the Color Map slot. An 'Open file' dialog window appears.

4. Select the MP4 file you want to show as playing on the TV screen.

5. Delete the Normalmap in the Normalmap slot.

6. Set the Standard Material Properties:  make sure that the Scale slider is set to 0, so that the imported texture placement data from your 3D modelling application is used. Also,  set Gloss, Reflectivity, Relief to 0.

If you want the look of the TV having glass and it needed to be noticeable (less common for visualization needs) then you would need to have a model with a surface for the video, and an outer surface for the glass front.

7. Click the big tick button -> Save ( for OK Apply Material).  

You are now good to go. The MP4 video in your scene will play continuously in a loop.

Lumion does not include the sound from the source video when the scene is rendered. This is to avoid other sound and background noise conflicts, as well as ensure volume levels for user experience are not at issue. If you need sound then do that as a post-process in a video editor.

1. The MP4 file size must be less than 50 MB.

[Advanced Knowledge:] Reduce the videos length as much as possible.  The shorter the better (depending on what you need to show).  Video that is not going to be seen in the final animation, or by viewers of the scene, is a waste of resources for other scene content.  A video clip length of 15 to 30 seconds is usually plenty.

The resolution of the video should be as small as is possible.  For example if the video is in 1920x1080, then it will take more resources to show the video in realtime.  For a model of TV screen, the resolution could be reduced to 640x360, and still retain the quality.  It also depends how large the area of the TV screen is, as to what resolution you should use.

5. Creating the "dummy" Texture:

The trick is to assign a "dummy" texture with the desired aspect ratio to the screen in your 3D modelling software.  It can be any aspect ratio, as long as the Video Texture you're planning on assigning to the screen in Lumion has the same aspect ratio as the "dummy" texture you've used.

     5.1  First, create a "dummy" (placeholder) texture in your image editor such as Photoshop.

     5.2  Then add the texture to the relevant material in SketchUp.

     5.3  Select the screen surface, right-click and choose Texture -> Position.

The goal is to make sure that the texture covers the screen 100% and is not tiling (see the screenshots below).

That way, the MP4 video texture will also cover the whole screen in Lumion when you re-import the SKP file (just make sure that the Scale slider value is 0 in the Standard material in Lumion).

The first frame of the video texture is always displayed when rendering still images in Photo Mode. Switch to Movie Mode and adjust the timeline slider if you want to render a different video texture frame.
