Well i have tried to work around the issues with translucent materials and have gotten OK results.  My questions is could there be a way to have a channel on the standard material that would allow for translucence.  Maybe a channel like the bump map that would allow for people to use a map that is 25%, 50%, 27% grey, or transparent PNG.  If not, what could be a work around (previously i have used the water tool).  We use translucent materials in many of our spaces, lights, glass, and counter tops are just small samples of what we run into. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes its a downside that full transparent gardients are not supported. I tried to blend some terrainstuff but had no success due the alphatest support only. :(
