Lumion is the king of simple, powerful and fast scene composition and animation, but it's rendering quality is starting to hold it back as a real solution for architects.

As many of you are aware Lumion's GI capabilities a very limited ... Especially for indoor environments, which are crucial for architectural work. The study of Light is probably the single most important base for every piece of work in this field.

I'm not a programmer so not really informed on how difficult or not it is to implement and evolve Lumion's Engine (DirectX vs OpenGL etc), but over the recent years more and more realtime GI solutions are becoming a reality (CryEngine, Geomerics Enlighten, Unreal Engine4 (WiP)). These are NOT really direct competition like LumenRT or TwinMotion are but exactly for that reason they do bring more to the final result and should not be dissmissed.

- Physically Based Rendering for materials
- Screen Space Realtime Reflections (CE3/UE4)
- Post processing AA
- Tessellation
- Distance Field Ambient Occlusion

.. and other approaches are also a giant leap forward in terms of quality & speed.

These "new" technologies are raising the bar in realtime rendering.

But enough talk.. Would love to see Lumion beat the competition with this kind of rendering implementation. Here's a guy that has been working on such approaches with apparent success!

Hello

you say : rendering quality is starting to hold it back as a real solution for architects.

iv looked at the videos in your post, and while there's always room for improvement, and progress
i personally cant see much difference,in quality, to compare ?

all the effects shown, while navigating, are already available, via a button called: Build with effects

World environments like ocene-Water and Animated SKY , are pretty impossible to render fast and accurately, without excessive render times, not to mention D.O.F. Depth of Field.
most render photos in Pro4 , are in seconds, not hours .

Dont get me wrong i know of Lumion's many strengths and the limits you can push it to, but i'm specifically talking about Interior Rendering and overall Global Illumination/Ambient Occlusion for architecture.

For exteriors its almost unnoticeable and very high quality in conjunction with all the effects/envoirement/awesome skies! but... the quality of interior lighting is a whole different game and for architecture light quality is a must. The only way to push quality further is the make the light solution a bit better.

Lumions biggest strenghts is to make the whole experience 'almost' real-time and render in seconds instead of hours but quality would benefit IMMENSELY even if you had to wait 10 minutes for a precalculation of the light the final result would benefit very VERY much and the short wating time would be totally acceptable compared withe the quality of the output!

Here's an example of a couple of movies done in realtime with a precalculated light (about 10 minutes of precalculation in Unreal Engine 4):

(mind that the Unreal Engine workflow (importing, material assign, etc) it totaly overkill for architects .. and doesnt compare with Lumion's simplicity)

For a moment, I thought Twinmotion was dead, but they seem to pick up where they have left and came up with some very nice improvements. However, they seem to have taken a step back on photorealistic renderings which was their main selling point.  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOjK8lWjcjDowBMKV7n3xhA
