I thought GrowFX had a stand-alone version which exported to FBX?
Trees and all plants are specially prepared in order to work optimally in Lumion for real-time purposes, so if they are imported from elsewhere, there could be some impact on ability to build scenes and render times.
There are many resources for trees such as general via TurboSquid and some providers also prepare low polygon models as well as some more specially targeted for real-time environments.
Also there's professionally designed trees from modelling services such as Evermotion.org.
Models that have texture mapping for leaves are preferred over polygon based plants. What is used also depends on how many are needed in a scene, refer comments this post:
Plants in Lumion 3Models will only be static - no wind animation as there is no connection from them to the Lumion Wind settings, and animating them for wind would add substantially to size of animation file required to be run in real-time.
