What you want to achieve is possible, but does require manual work.
First of all, here's where the scenes and imported objects are stored:
Documents/Lumion 2/Scenes:
All scenes saved in Lumion 2 Basic/Ultimate (2 files per scene)
Documents/Lumion 2/Library:
Models imported in Lumion 2 Basic/Ultimate (up to 4 files per model)
1 ) If your original scene is called Scene_A, save a copy called Scene_B.
2 ) Close Lumion.
3 ) Copy and rename the imported model that you want to make a variation of in Documents/Lumion 2/Library (There are up to 4 files for each model). If the original is called Model_A, I'll call the variation Model_B in this example.
4 ) Start Lumion and load Scene_B.
5 ) In the Import section, place Model_B in your scene, so you can see both Model_A and B at the same time.
6 ) Select both models using CTRL + rectangular selection.
7 ) Context menu -> Click on Model_A -> Transformation -> Same rotation
8 ) Edit properties -> Click on Model_A -> Make a note of the position values
9 ) Delete Model_A
10) Edit properties -> Click on Model_B -> Type in the position values
11) Edit the materials of Model_B.
12) Save Scene_B again.
