The Cuda cores on the GTX 680 are completely different from those on the GTX580.
It's also Kepler GK104 GPU based. No way it's going to offer 3 times the performance
of the 580. I'd expect it to be 30% faster at the most (gladly proven wrong though!).
If you want the best I'd advise to wait until Nvidia starts the rollout of the new GK100
GPU's which should offer proper upgraded performance compared to the 580 high-end range.

680 GTX is retro compatible  with  PCI express 2.0 ... we won't be oblige to change our motherboards...... that's a good news

Powerconsumption seems good.
Also the 1st benchmarks seem to indicate it's tesselation performance is quite impressive.
Useless for Lumion but excellent news for those into DX11 game-engine based projects.
I wonder if Lumion will fetch the non-native FXAA in buildmode with reasonable performance.
That would be really great news.

ok gurus, what does this really mean if i am spec'ing out a "Lumion" machine right now? Is the gtx 680 better or worse than the gtx 580?

i am primarily concerned with Lumion performance above all else. faster render times are what i am after.

should be far better. benchmark tests on gamestar showed increse from 30 to 100 % depending on the games ...
than there is less power consumption. if i were to buy a new grafic card today i would buy a gtx 680. but maybe i would wait for a more silent cooling system ...

According to this thread, the GK110 will have 3072 CUDA Cores (twice the number of cores of the GK104 GPU).

I guess with the right overclocking tools and the know how you could just burn down the whole house with this thing.

Yeah for sure.
Now lets hope:

1) Nvidia doesn't again stall these because of printing issues
2) This thing doesn't require its own nuclear reactor
3) Nvidia puts so much memory on it, people will laugh for months about how overkill it is until they find it's actually quite nice to have.
