Will you be upset if everyone can use the free version without a "DEMO" overlay?

;)  "It's only Money" - an old saying like...

Robert Frost
A bank is a place where they lend you an umbrella in fair weather and ask for it back when it begins to rain.

Benjamin Franklin
A penny saved is a penny earned.

William A. Ward
Before you speak, listen. Before you write, think. Before you spend, earn. Before you invest, investigate. Before you criticize, wait. Before you pray, forgive. Before you quit, try. Before you retire, save. Before you die, give.

J. Paul Getty
Buy when everyone else is selling and hold until everyone else is buying. That's not just a catchy slogan. It's the very essence of successful investing.

Norman Vincent Peale
Empty pockets never held anyone back. Only empty heads and empty hearts can do that.

Samuel Butler
Friendship is like money, easier made than kept.

Eleanor Roosevelt
He who loses money, loses much; He who loses a friend, loses much more; He who loses faith, loses all.

Billy Graham
If a person gets his attitude toward money straight, it will help straighten out almost every other area in his life.

Francis Bacon
If money be not thy servant, it will be thy master. The covetous man cannot so properly be said to possess wealth, as that may be said to possess him

Henry Ford
If money is your hope for independence you will never have it. The only real security that a man will have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience, and ability.

Henry Ford
It's not the employer who pays the wages. Employers only handle the money. It's the customer who pays the wages.

Every parent needs to have a talk with their children.  It starts there.  This link will help.

and - Lumion is awesome.
I can understand why teenagers would slobber at the chance of making movies with it.
If when I was growing up and this was out there I would rake a lot of yards to have it.

then there is this!
A Software Kleptomaniac is perhaps an unaddressed medical condition levied upon human beings, born with the advancement and fulfillment of only once imaginable mass communication tools and access to the seemingly endless amplification of information injected into the human condition, which as a body-whole will never be fully capable of adapting too.  Humans are organic.  lol

IMO the logo on the corner on image/animation and limit animation export to 1-2 minutes are enough for most cases.

IMO make people willing to download demo is better than let them find illegal copy which Lumion company got nothing much (It help in some way for long term, see how it help some company to be the standard AEC software of this world. And how they handle and making load of money by sue a lot company to bankruptcy when become no 1. But this method shouldn't work anymore in this age). They may end up using their current software or go somewhere else and it is hard to get them back if they have not so good impression.

We are on the age of freemium. The free version goal should be make people spend time on Lumion as much as possible and get addicted. SketchUp free is very successful on this, it won't be so successful with so limited free version. They even go further with limited trial time for pro version. To me, people should be able to test Lumion on the production and with a few real clients. And when they love it, they will buy it because they would want more, like plug-ins and longer animations, no one willing to work with cropping and connecting images/animation forever, it is boring and sure to break workflow and compositions ;)

Lumion need an army of free user work which would uploads tons of work on Youtube/Gallery themself, the more freedom = more quality works, free advertising and go viral!

Imagine if Lumion can really distribute free version to millions copies, Just one percent convert is 10,000. And there will be a lot potentials to monetize Lumion in many ways, even they not going to buy it. See how free apps on apple store getting load of money ;)

There're 6 billions people on earth. IMO 10 Millions free users is better than have 10 thousands paid users and not much free users this day. Community need a lot people to get it going strong.

Thanks,
Ming

10,000 x $1,000 = $10,000,000

better than 1,000,000 x Free = Free

Sorry for not clear explanation. There would be convert rate. For example 1 people of every 1,000 downloads may eventually end up buy lumion one day. If 10 millions target user downloaded, I think that would not make so little sell because Lumion is amazing. I think there're more than 10 million architects or artist/film-related field on this earth. If the goal is to make every architects who want perspective image or animation for presentation try Lumion, that's BIG.

There're ways to make money by give free software. In case you wonder how to, even illegal downloaders can really make money for those who provide hosting service. For extreme case, Megaupload get 100 millions dollars from advertisers who want to exposed to those downloaders. Of course, it's not how we want to make money. Sorry for off-topics, but it seem hot ;). For good side, see how free apps on apple store make load of money. Marketers have too many techniques these day.

Good wrap up from Techcrunch about freemium:

Addition: Just remembered that Unity3d doing this successfully for quite sometime. Seem related to Lumion now:

Congrats on your shiny new PC, Chris :)

Just to give you an update, Ferry has recently sent me a test version of Build 3 and I'm currently double-checking that all the bugs he has fixed really have been fixed. There are still some unresolved issues though, so my personal (unqualified) guess is that they will release Lumion 2 Free in February instead of in January, so hang in there...
