LUMION 5 on WINDOWS 10

Before I had my Windows 8.1 upgraded to Windows 10, my Lumion was running perfectly.
I have and Acer Aspire E15
Intel Core i7
NVIDIA Geforce 840M 2GB
8GB RAM

When I run Lumion, it says "Device/driver does not support hardware shadow maps!"
Anyone knows when Lumion will have compatibility with Windows 10? Because I think the only way to let my Lumion work is to go back to Win8.1 but it will be such a hassle and it needs to reformat my laptop.

Btw: I've tried to run Lumion with Windows 7/8 compatibility but still won't work.

Hi stefflee12

Please follow the instructions in our FAQ topic: NEED SUPPORT? on registering your license.

Lumion does have compatibility with Windows 10.  We have a number of users that have upgraded or upgraded during pre-releases of Windows without problems.

I have also upgraded to Windows 10 today and have had no problems (with Lumion).

The message you get indicates a certain DirectX component that was there before the Windows upgrade is not being seen by Windows now.  Please check the following first, and let us know, so that we can move to the next step if required.

1. Is your laptop using the NVIDIA drivers or is it still running the Windows default display drivers?  Usually a reboot will return the NVIDIA drivers to run as default for the upgrade, however this might not happen in all cases.

2. Please check that you have an NVIDIA Control Panel running on the desktop, and that the Manage 3D Settings is set to the High Performance NVIDIA Processor.  Refer: this topic to set the correct GPU.

Although Lumion 5 will do an auto-detect to use the NVIDIA card, it is worthwhile still making sure that setting is in the NVIDIA profile.

By the way, the Geforce 840M has a Passmark of only 841, and that is well below minimum specifications. Refer:
[dot] LUMION 5: Minimum hardware requirements. (same for prior versions).
 [dot] Lumion Web Site: Specifications.

3. How long have you been running Lumion and what sort of scenes are you working on?

4. You say that you're using Lumion 5. Do you mean 5.0 or one of the 5.x updates?

Hi zainul25

There are no known problems for released Lumion v5 versions relating to driver/shadow map issues.

Please follow the instructions in our FAQ topic: NEED SUPPORT? on registering your license.

Also, provide details about your PC specifications by attaching the Lumion DXDiag Report (Files --> Chart Summary --> Run DXDiag).

It is also recommended that you upgrade (free for licensed users) to the latest version of Lumion V5.7.2.

Hi iZEN, thanks for sharing your experience with Lumion in Windows 10 :)

By the way, please click here and follow step 2, 3 and 4 to register your license, so that you get access to the full forum for Commercial Users.

(I would also recommend that you upgrade to the latest version, i.e. 5.7.2)

I am about to make a substantial investment in a workstation for the exclusive purpose of running Lumion 6 Pro.
Can I be confident that performance under Windows 10 will be acceptable?
Thanks.

Hi

Lumion runs fine under Windows 10.  We have plenty of users who work with Windows 10.  I currently use it for my desktop PC.

Some of the issues you see (in this topic) relate to unresolved questions about hardware and Lumion versions, and as the members have not replied, we can only assume things are now resolved  ;).

There is a current issue regarding accessing more than 4GB of VRAM where scenes exceed the 4GB.  In other words if you will be working on scenes with less than 4GB it's not a problem, even so in a number of cases there are some steps to assist in working around the problem.

The developers are very aware of the problem and working to resolve the issue, rather than wait for any Microsoft solution.

Hi Álvaro,

Windows 8.x and 10 do not allow DirectX 9 applications (such as Lumion 5.x) to use more than 4GB graphics card memory for a given application. However, in Windows 7 this cap does not exist. The developers are aware of this problem and are researching possible solutions (Nvidia has confirmed to one of our developers that they have also replicated the problem - hopefully this can put some more pressure on Microsoft to resolve the problem).

For the time being we recommend that you use Lumion in Windows 7 if your graphics card has more than 4GB memory, so that you can take advantage of all of the available graphics card memory. You can of course still use Lumion on Windows 8.x and 10 if your graphics card has more than 4GB memory, but you will just not be able to use any graphics card memory above 4GB.

If your graphics card has got 4GB memory or less, you can use Lumion on Windows 8.x and 10 without noticing the memory problem (according to those of our users who have already upgraded to Windows 10 Beta).

(As you're probably aware, Microsoft has announced that it will let Windows 7 and 8 owners upgrade to Windows 10 for free for 1 year after it is released on July 29 2015, so you do have a whole year to consider upgrading while it's still free. There's more information here)

Successfully operating Lumion also requires consideration of type of hardware for the type of scenes you will want to create, so feel free to ask some questions about your workstation environment suitability (please do so in a new topic).

Act-3D also have some general advice: Web site Guide: Hardware for Lumion.
