Hi Pauldavis
Welcome to the forum and Lumion.
Could you please add your Lumion 4 license key to your account (click
here, scroll to the bottom and enter your license number).
Scenes will not get lost by upgrading to the latest v4.5. Scenes can also be opened in an earlier v4 if you needed to go back to that version. Version 4.5 will use the same workspace folders in 'My Documents' as in earlier v4 versions.
What you can do for extra safety is use the
saveAs feature by renaming your scene to give an extra working copy. This is for the scene, Imported Objects though are saved direct, so you should also consider backup, see below.
It is often good practice to complete current projects in the current version used, then work through an upgrade. If however, as some users find, they want to make use of the new features, then they may upgrade. So far we have not seen any prior version upgrade issues, except for one possible issue with some models from SketchUp.
As you noted Lumion (standard) does not have the save project to file. However, it is expected that all users would have suitable backup practices in place in order to recover files from prior days if needed. All files in the \My Documents\Lumion 4 should be backed up with either Windows File History, or a backup tool, most of which can be purchased for less than $100.
