Is it possible to make photorealistic images in Lumion?

We're evaluating Lumion as a potention rendering software for the company. However, my company makes two types of rendering images. One is what we call the "luxigon (www.luxigon.fr) images". These are artistic images done for competition and early PD and DD work. The renderings are produced  in Vray, but with basic materials and many hours in Photoshop to get the artistic look. The second kind of rendering is the photo realistic rendering images where it's hard to tell if it's a photo or a rendering. I believe that the Lugixon renderings are possible in Lumion since the whole final look of the imagine is done in photoshop. Only problem is that Lumion can't export layers to photoshop, which will make it more time consuming to make selection.

Is Lumion capable of making photorealistic renderings? If so, what are procedures to get the photo realistic look? What I've seen so far in the gallery are more of the gaming look .

I've made two simple interior renderings in Vray and Lumion without any post production work. How do I get the Lumion image to look as the Vray image?

Hi,
Lumion on it self will not output a topnotch Vray result if a renderfarm took 1 hr to render it, where lumion renders the image in a few seconds. But we have seen some very nice results.

As from Lumion Pro 2.5 you are able to export different kind of image/maps to make post processing easier, for images and movies. You can now export

  • Depthmap
    Normalmap
    Specular reflection map
    Lightmap
    Sky Alpha map
    Material ID map

Are you telling me the 2 images you posted  are vray ?

The top one is a Vray rendering with default settings and the bottom one is Lumion.

Hi Andrew,

As far as I see, there is not much difference between those two pictures you posted.
If you would add the reflection on the glass on lower image, I think both images will be more or less the same.

So from my experience, a reply to your question is: yes, Lumion can make a photo realistic images!

Hello Andre

Lumion still not working with Global Illumination, then you must use lights to simulate this effect. This will give more realism to your scene.

So basically the lack of GI and ambient occlusion is what causes the fake imaginary look? You can clearly see on the images that the objects appear to be floating due to the lack of ambient occlusion i guess.

What gives images their 'real' look is usually the lighting. The problem is that fully realistic lighting consists of a lot of indirect soft lighting. In computational terms this mean there's a lot to calculate.

Ever noticed that the difference in outdoor scenes is a lot less than indoor scenes? This is because outdoor scenes are mainly lit by direct sunlight and indirect light is not as dominant as in indoor scenes. Now if only we could have indirect lighting in Lumion.... .... ... ;)

Well, that's good to know. For now i think it's best to do the interior render in Vray or any unbiased rendering software. Twinmotion does have some sort of GI but the slow performance is still a huge deal breaker.

The engine is only one part of the photo real solution....I have seen some pretty bad images done with both Vray and Lumion.

Why photo real? ...as an achievement? or as a product? Photo-real is not overly popular for day to day work-flow in an engineering office.....and besides us, who is out there drawing the line between Lumion and Vray...etc..etc as they review the images for an on-going project...nobody that I know. My customers compose images on the phone with me and get them in seconds...then call back later and ask for a change on the fly again...this is a daily routine....VRAY??..there is just no way it could come close in this working scenario. It was religated to the shelf some time ago.

I was just a few months ago a non-biased rendering addict.....it just didn't pay so I gave up the habit.

I would not sleep more ... I'd be kidding all the time with Lumion.
My job would be a fun.  :-D
