Graphics card query

Hi,

I am an architecture student (Masters in Architecture) and I would like to buy a new laptop.

Dell XPS 15 Touch has a NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 750M 2GB GDDR5 graphics card, which has a passmark score of 1,529.
Since the passmark score reaches the minimum requirement for running the program, I would like to ask you whether Lumion can still work satisfactory with this graphics card, having in mind that I will be working on small to medium size projects. And if it does, how well does it run on this laptop - resolution wise?

My other question is whether the minimum required passmark score will change as new versions of Lumion will be introduced in the future.

Hi stathis23

It only just meets minimum.  The problem as I see, is that although it might work well in one Lumion scene (with consequent expectations), some other scene may have different demands and not work well.  At most, to be cautious, you would limit yourself to 'basic'/small scenes, and not medium scenes, which we indicate requires a Passmark much higher.

I appreciate as a student you will have a limited budget.  Is a desktop option not available?  You get much more bang for $, especially from the GPU.  Portability/mobility is of course important.

For laptops (refer other topics we have made comment on in Guest Section) there's really only the GTX 675M, GTX 770M or GTX 780M or newer cards.  I think you might find something maybe in price range for a 770M as the 750M, or there is some other hardware and software that you could change to get towards a higher specification laptop, for example screen size.

We are not able to indicate how well Lumion runs on specific laptops.

For all Lumion projects there are things that can be done to help with onscreen performance and rendering, including lowering the resolution, editor quality etc, so managing the software for the hardware is also an expectation.

My other question is whether the minimum required passmark score will change as new versions of Lumion will be introduced in the future.

Sorry, but unable to comment on that, as I do not know what might be in future versions and how well those might operate with the card, or what changes might happen to drivers to make them perform differently.

Hi

The difference will be in;
1.  screen performance - FPS in Build and Movie Editor Mode.
2.  extra 2GB of VRAM to allow for more complex/content in a scene.

With the 860M you will get improved FPS, it would be noticeable, but it's not possible to say that you would get 2 or 5 or 10 extra FPS without actually testing Lumion scenes with each hardware.  The performance difference would result from 640 versus 384 cores, plus improved memory speed and use of newer Maxwell architecture in the 860M.

See reviews:
1.  NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M.
2.  NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M.

A quick scan of games performance results indicates much better FPS for the 860M in those reviews.

With the 750M you will only just get by, with the 860M you have a comfortable margin to do small to more medium scenes.
