I'm trying to generate some elevations and have got so far to adjust the Focal Length to 300mm, aligned the view and turned the sky all bright (wish a solid color for backgrounds). 

But the distance to the model demands that the shadow range has to pushed up in range, but this means the shadow edges gets very blurred and disconnected to the objects.

Is there some workaround for this ?

Orthogonal cameras are unfortunately not yet available in Lumion, so cranking up the Focal length slider to max is your only option. Unfortunately, the shadows will get blurrier at that range, and there's nothing you can do about this issue (the shadows in renderings do however look less pixelated than in the preview).

Regarding the background, if you make the whole sky bright white, the reflective materials in your scene will look quite bland.

I tend to import a vertical plane that I place in the background, and I then assign a Color material to the plane: Edit materials -> Custom -> Color material.

You can also use your own sky dome object with a custom sky texture. Here's how:
