Do bump makes work ok in lumion?

I've just been trying to work on a castle turret which involves a lot of complex mapping (because its a cylinder).

The bump looks pretty terrible (see attached). Is this normal?

Also, if I unwrap the object and do my own custom uvw map, will it import ok? Or is there just a default planar/box style mapping that lumion uses?

If you mean the vertical "sharp" segments, they're actually caused by missing/incorrect smoothing information in the model. When you export your model, is there an option/tickbox to include smoothing?

I have thrown quite complex UV mapping examples at Lumion and it could always handle anything I tried...

In Lumion you use normal maps to provide bump detail, re second texture slot referred to as bump map in the Standard Material Type - Textures dialogue.

Make the normalmap in Photoshop, Crazybump or ShaderMap Pro etc tool and add manually as an additional texture by clicking on the slot, then tweak the look by changing the sliders in the Advanced Options.

Ah, normal maps. I didn't know it used normal maps.

Cheers! I'll give that a try.

Hey Peter!

Would you mind explaining the normal map process for Photoshop?  Thanks!

Hi Chase, here's some info to get you started:

1) Download NVIDIA Texture Tools for Adobe Photoshop:
http://developer.nvidia.com/content/nvidia-texture-tools-adobe-photoshop

2) Photoshop -> Filter -> NVIDIA Tools -> NormalMapFilter

(You'll get better results with CrazyBump though)

PixPlant also has some very easy tools to make normal maps. CrazyBump is said to the the top-most application but PixPlant is much cheaper (and it can also generate seamlessly tiling textures from any custom photos and such).

The current King of the hill regarding normalmaps is nDo2.
It's fairly affordable for a single seat license:

The basic "colour" materials in SketchUp would be called "diffuse". Normal maps are those blueish images with a hint of red and other colours indicating irregularities on the surface. See attached below (a simple SU material exported and its normal map also added)

hi gai, thanx a lot. so in texture mode the diffuse one is the basis texture and the normal is for bumping (depth of structure)......right? now i understand, that i have to gererate the normals from the doffuse textures.
