It turns out that (CTRL) + (Reload) is only needed if Low Mem mode is enabled in the Settings menu. If Low Mem mode isn't enabled, you can load textures of whatever size your graphics card is capable of showing.
However, Low mem mode is a little buggy at the moment:
Low mem mode on: Import model/apply texture to Standard/Lightmap material
512x512: Loaded at the correct resolution.
1024x1024: Loaded at the correct resolution.
2048x2048: Capped at 512x512 and CTRL + Reload model doesn't override the cap.
4096x4096: Capped at 512x512 and CTRL + Reload model doesn't override the cap.
It doesn't make sense that you can load a 1024x1024 texture without problems, but higher resolution textures are capped at 512x512, so I added these issues to the bug tracker list some days ago.
