I have experienced this issue, but with an FBX exported directly from Revit 2011.  My understanding is that this occurs due to MentalRay materials.

Brian and i have been experimenting with different export method from sketchup in an attempt to have each material grouped throughout the entire model, by material, so it only needs one edit to adjust a material everywhere in the model. So far, we can not achieve this for some reason.

We have tried .dae and .3ds to no avail. I like the .3ds format better because the material names are preserved on import (.dae files rename materials to numbers) but the problem still exists. if one material named "Aluminum" was used in different groups and/or components, Lumion may end up having "Aluminum1" "aluminum2" and so on for some reason. It is frustrating and is not allowing us to very simply tweek the SU file and reload to Lumion because some material settings get lost on re-import as well as the name problem with materials.

Kerkythea's export from Sketchup works very well no matter how many nested groups or components are in the SU and it creates a very neat .xml file. The Su plugin is called SU2KT and can be found on Kerkythea's website.

Is it possible that Lumion can accommodate importing .xml files?

We're well aware of the problem and obviously it shouldn't be this much of a hassle for you to import/reload models from SketchUp. I'm very much looking forward to seeing the result of Artur's investigation! Smile

Just a poke to see if this was addressed in the release today.  I imported the model file i sent to you, and it still has the same issue.  Not trying to rush you, just kinda an FYI.

I did the same experiment. Clicked "reload" on an imported model and some materials went black. I use dthe trick of "creating a new material" and all materials became OK. After that, I have tried making more changes in SketchUp and reimporting several times, including adding new models with new materials, and it has worked fine so far.

This has also been a big problem for me. I get very inconsistent results when updating and reloading a model. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's so inconsistent that I can't figure out what is going on. The only thing I know for certain is that conponents and groups are the worst. This makes it very difficult to work in SU, since I have to explode all components and groups, I need to keep a seperate export file so I don't mess up my modeling file. I can't tell you how frustrating it is to get all the way to the end of setting up in Lumion, only to find one problem that requires a reload. Then I'm back into setting up the materials all over again. ARRRRRRRGH!!!!!

What can be done?

Also, sometimes groups make it impossible to select a material. The material selection seems to really need some work.

Maybe other SU users can shed some light on this issue? I am not sure if the DEA file itself has a problem that can only be solved in SU or that importing is going wrong.

I have the same issues. In Sketchup I always work with groups. When I export to collada and import it into Lumion all the materials become black or the textures get mixed up. Sometimes it doesn't happen. I also had a problem with faces that disappear. When I explode everything, the problem is solved.

Thanks for the tip. Normally I check all the faces in the model. The strange thing was that the faces where oriented in the right direction. Ungrouping solved the problem in this particular issue.

Hi Proso

These last versions of SU working with some plugins (specially those sculpt's plugins) disoriente the faces when you do some 3D operations. Take care with this issue, 'cause it will become in problems in Lumion.

One solutions is ungrouping or exploding the SU's models, right!!, but if you need some changes later it could be a little boring working with thousands of triangles.

Hi Proso,
I hope we found the way to import files from SU without "Explode" scene.

Could you send me your example file (as small as possible) with the issue?
Then we will make sure that everything is ok now.
