Townhouse Development

I've just completed this Townhouse Development in conjunction with a local architectural firm. All the modeling was done in Sketchup and I have worked on this for around 2 weeks including 7 days on Lumion.

This was a particularly difficult project due to the topography of the site. The surrounding terrain was 'grabbed' from Google Earth. I then replaced the surface photography with much clearer imagery from Nearmaps.

It was a painstaking task meshing the internal site topography with the road, buildings and site boundaries in order to create smooth transitions between each. I used the 'Fredo6' tool set in Sketchup to do this and the 'Follow me and keep' plugin for the kerbs.

I managed to keep the model down to about 60 Mb by grouping everything in Sketchup. There are hundreds of lights and thousands of plants in this model. The Lumion model has 5.2 million vertices, which is pretty small considering my 'Cityscape' post several months ago had 42 million vertices!

The movie took around 3 hours to render.

Computer specs as follows:
i7 2600, Nvidia 570 graphics, 16 GB RAM.

Hi alickn,

The movie is a private video on Vimeo, but not on Lumion. It should play OK on this site. I hope so anyway.

Very nice Derek!

I like the lighting and the composition of most of the shots.
Nighttime is a nice addition too (no Dingos/Kangaroo/Koala neighbourhood? :-()
The music is relaxing, even though I reckon it would have been better if the person
playing that flute would have gone walkabout while shooting the vid. Bit of improvement could perhaps be achieved with varying the cam speed between shots. Right now all clips are more or less equally paced..Not sure if that's good or bad. Leaves me graving for those couple of steady as she goes slowies so to speak :-) You could also try and experiment with a bit more SSAO/Diffuse shadow. It will help stick stuff to the ground and also give you additional contrast in features as for example the white roofing which now gets leveled out a bit too much.

Bravo!  I can't believe all the topographical mesh work, its so hard to get the topo to work right.  It looks incredible.  Also, good use of the aerial image on the opening shot, superb. Great job.

One comment would be to add the ambient shadow and ambient scale effect, it will really add depth to the ambient shadows.

Nice work,

Vince

Thank you Vincent, Aaron, alickn for your kind and useful comments. I will definitely take on board your suggestions regarding the various shadow settings. I need to experiment with these a little
more for sure!

I kept the camera speed pretty constant due to the slow relaxing music and tranquil environment. No noisy planes here! I tried to retain interest by varying the camera height, position, forward, backward, day, night, god rays etc.

A few Koalas in the trees would be great - but I don't think Ferry has this at the top of his 'to do' list. I think I would be the only user of that one.

Many thanks for your comments arch_bd, Kais and alickn. Just out of interest I have attached a couple of images of the terrain modeling.
