Hey guys!

 

I'm an architecture student and I was given an assignment to make a proposal for a building estate project.  I did not get any extra credit for the animation, but I decided to make one for fun anyway. And I must really say that for the first time it has been so easy and interesting to work on a visualisation project. I thank the developers for making such a cool app and bringing their contribution to the CG community.

The massing part was done in Sketchup with some 3d warehause models added afterwards. I made a quick google earth zoom in and put it all togeather. The movie was rendered at a 1920 x 1080 resolution medium quality with an added AA filter at an average of 1 frame per second with a GTS 250 GC.

How long did it take to render?

And by the way, how did you do that google earth zoom? Is there a export option in google earth or did you capture that part?

It took about an hour to render the first part an about 20 minutes for the ending.

 

I marked the location I needed as what I'm gona see when google earth start so it would show in the side bar. Then zoomed out, clicked on the link and recorded the zoom in with fraps. As I remember, the google earth pro version had a great movie making option.

What is your shadow range set to?  Looks like the shadows aren't visible until the camera gets closer to the masses.

You will need the update to increase the shadow range so that all buildings are in the shadow.

Thanks! I went throught all the setting but somehow missed it and thought that is normal. Shouldn't the shadow range be automatically set to max when rendering at the best quality?  

 

After a few hour work I started renderig and after a while I got many reinite object errors after what all the trees where showing only as bilboards even at close range. I tried replacing them but the problem did not go away. Has this kind of glich ever been documented?

 

Also could it be possible to modify the sun position by changing the time of day and year and setting exact geo-coordiantes for more precise results?

More people had the billboard tree problem. But I haven't been able to reproduce it here.

Shadow range is not automatically increased because it would reduce shadow resolution. For a close up scene you probably want high resolution shadows and for big scenes you want high shadow range. At full quality the resolution is increased for best quality but for long ranges scenes like this you still need to set the shadow range to long distance.
