Lumion 8 - Even Steelwork can Look Sexy!

Being in the steel "shed" business doesn't lend itself very often to coming up with pretty buildings but since using Lumion for the past year our clients have been blown away by how good their sheds can look in our renders.
The new variations feature of Lumion 8 is likely to be one of my favourite and most used features.
The attached images show a Tekla Structures model imported directly into sketchup for tweaking and materials assignment, then two variations, with and without cladding rendered in Lumion 8

The framework looks very good indeed ! Sexy might be pushing it though, but...   if steel's your thing...  ;)

Could a touch of 'weathering' on the cladding bring a bit more glamour ? I was playing about with the weathering last night and was impressed by it's potential in braking up larger areas of repeating materials. Some sweet spots in their if you hold down the shift key when changing parameters.

I agree, the weathering effects can produce some interesting effects but perhaps not so appealing to the clients who are getting everything shiny and new on their new build - there is a little weathering on the existing building in the background tho.

Is steelwork sexy? - best ask our erection managers  :o

Hot or not - the steel frame work is the first Lumion image that 100% fooled me ! I thought it was a photograph at first glance - hats off  :o  The blue cladding was the give away on the finished product though - and a material I often have struggle with in terms of realism. Not sure in Lumion (haven't tried) but certainly in other software you can get some nice touches of 'realism' across expanses of cladding by adding a very large/soft bump to relief channel and playing about with reflection channel. Not unlike the bump channel in the pureglass materials. Still looks shiny and new - but less repetitive - if you can't cheat with a dirty great tree shadow to break things up ! But indeed - 'new' and 'realistic' are problematic. Maybe HDRI for Lumion one day  ;)

Yes I find cladding difficult for absolute realism, especially large curved roofs where moire effect problems can ruin the image. The mining workshop attached has a fair degree of weathering and works quite well I think, especially with the sun angle.
I think Lumion has made it so easy to achieve good levels of realism that we often overlook just how realistic we actually need to go at times, when less realism would have been perfectly acceptable - Damn you Lumion!  :-D

Prior to Lumion I was rendering within sketchup using a proprietory renderer which I often let run overnight to achieve only a mediocre level of realism.

:D I'm trying to wean clients off 'photo-real' - just as Lumion was making it so easy ! With realism becoming so routine - I think there will be a movement away from these styles of render towards something just a bit more fun and dynamic. Sure I'll start an arguement - but why is photorealism the holy grail ? I do it for clients who want it - but for me it's just become a little boring. Like a rusty 2000 year old cup might be if you actually found it  ;)
