Just my 2c.. When I apply the DOF effect, I tend to do the same thing each time.
1 - turn on auto focus
2 - click the little pencil, then click somewhere of interest in the scene - usually somewhere in the middle
3 - crank the 'amount' slider until the entire image becomes blurry
4 - leave it cranked, and move the 'foreground/background' slider to get the right things in focus. you'll see a 'blur' move forward and backward. leave it at the spot which you prefer
5 - turn down the 'amount' slider so it's only a subtle effect
this tends to work 90% of the time, and has decent DOF effects
